@MIR I am surprised at you. You should know that when you command the masses, especially youth, using power you are likely to get a power struggle. When you use influence and couple that with authentic and enthusiastic engagement you get Tang Saturday in the student section. Leading by example and side by side, not just laying down the law.
It is fine to think that the chant is low class or that students should be better or whatever. But if you are trying to "fix" it, you will never do it the way Currie, Gene and Linton have tried (and failed) to fix it.
You think that chant started 45 minutes before kickoff, on the first game of the year, with hardly any alumni in the stadium, a reaction to fighting against the man? When the hell was the last time anyone other than Tang has mentioned it before then?
They did it because they think it's fun to chant eff ku, full stop. If the admin wouldn't have said a damn thing about it, the chant would have absolutely happened again and again this week.
Some of the students did something the admin and a lot of the alumni found unsavory and they did something about it, and it clearly worked. Most people aren't motivated by "eff the man," most actually want to do the right thing. The students needed a little push to do the right thing and it worked. This is why I'm far more frustrated with the grown ups who are acting like the chant isn't a matter of right and wrong. Kids eff up sometimes and it's okay to tell them when they do and expect them to do better.
