Possible WW3 thread
« Reply #1975 on: March 26, 2022, 10:10:45 PM »
#neoconGe hero Barry Obama refused to send lethal weapons to Ukraine, attempted to lay out a case that a Americans DNGAF about Ukraine and then used that as cover for overthrowing the democratically elected government of Ukraine.

Only putting the exclamation point on one of the most mumped up foreign policy administrations in U.S. history.

But that rough ridin' Trump!

Was that the democratically elected government where the guy elected won with like 97% of the vote?

i thought it was clear from what has been posted here re. mearsheimer that he thinks ukraine's allies should have not led it to believe that they had any chance of joining the nato, the eu or of turning towards "europe" more generally and that he currently does not think that they should aid it in resisting russia's attempt to conquer them.

i disagree with all of those things.
You don’t think Ukraine was led to believe that they would be able to join NATO or you think that they should have joined/been allowed to join ?

with the benefit of handsight and a little very cursory reading on the subject, i think they should have been added to nato quite a while ago, perhaps back around the turn of the century with poland, certainly no later than the great recession.

by the time 2014 came along it was probably too late.

Would you have been in favor of adding Russia to NATO when they requested in 1991 to join NATO?

Putin is looking bloated and bald and sickly as crap. I wouldn’t put it past the butcher to throw a nuke out there for spite as he fades to black. Autocracy’s are scary as crap without people saying no. Thank god a required amount of our military and intelligence was able to tell trump to eff right off about most things.

He’s always looked gross as crap

it's probably impossible for my answer not to be tinged with how subsequent events unrolled, but i'm an optimistic sort, so i imagine i'd have been in favor of that, dependent on them meeting conditions.

Yeah in retrospect it looks like a really bad miscalculation to not accept them.

They're not doing this because they aren't in NATO. That's a bullshit excuse.

It sounds hilarious.  I will just use my imagination, since you didn't provide a link to it.  Just sitting here chuckling about how great it must have been...

seems slightly at odds with poisoning the negotiators tho.

Now, I didn't read much about this but I was very :dubious: about what I did see. There is a lot I don't understand, from Ukraine's motive to releasing the info nearly a month later, after other negotiations took place.

Explain to me like I'm five why, if Putin, has been formally accused of war crimes, which he has, is it so controversial to call for him to be removed?

Because he has nuclear weapons and their long time national nuclear policy (which was recently re-stated amid a reporter pressing them on it) says that nuclear weapons can be used when there is an existential threat to the Russian state.

Calling for regime change is ambiguous enough to get some real clarity in the midst of bullets flying and especially when peace talks are ongoing.

Quality trolling, if true. Ukrainian wearing shirt lifted from Russian paratrooper strutting amongst wrecked Russian vehicles joking about being a Blackwater mercenary.
