MIR might yell at me for this, but I still enjoy Chappelle most of the time, although I thought the trans jokes were a bit lazy. Punching down at a vulnerable population is rarely a good formula for comedy, though it is easy. Nevertheless, there exists a receptive audience for that content, as we can see. To the extent I can even presume to know Chappelle's actual, private, non-comedian thoughts on trans people/rights (and I'm not sure I can presume or that his beliefs are static), I disagree with his stance, and I would consider that a character flaw of his. But he's a comedian. It's comedy, not lawmaking. I'm more concerned about the latter. I think those who would feel emboldened by Chappelle sticking it to the "woke" crowd on this issue already felt antipathy towards trans folks to begin with.

I have and will always separate art from the artist. The tricky thing with Dave is that he's compromising his art, a bit, by playing the victim.

Dave Chappelle is the greatest comedian of my lifetime, and I go back to Richard Pryor, when he isn't crying about how mean the trans people are to little ol dave. He's teetering towards "old Kanye" territory but he still has his fastball, just doesn't throw it as much as he should. I'm looking forward to SNL, should be fun.

Would be nice if they linked the article they're talking about.

Although it's not news anyway. As long as I've been alive I've heard people call the lottery a "poor tax."

The tldr is that poor people disproportionately play the lottery but the funds generally go to higher education and whatnot so it can be argued that the lottery is wealth redistribution from lower class to upper class

As said before me, the lottery has always targeted the poor and minorities. Not a new ‘woke’ take.

Targeted? What does the lottery do to target the poor and minorities?

It’s disingenuous to point it out as a racial problem rather than a class problem imo. It’s something that bugs me a lot about the move away from class politics by the left. The things that are good for poor people are good for them across the board.

It’s a big part of the reason we got Trump in the first place.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Just get rid of the lottery then, imo.  No objection from me on this element of "wokeness."

We can hold two related thoughts in our minds at the same time. There are wealth disparities among racial groups in this country, so anything that affects the lower class disproportionately affects certain racial groups. Unless you're suggesting we should work to get rid of those wealth disparities, your comment that we should only talk about class and not race seems like you're trying to ignore the latter.

lol, yet those same people have no problem equating crime rates to race. It's okay to acknowledge poverty and crime, in this country, have ties to race created by policies like redlining.

That says nothing about state lotteries targeting the poor and minorities. All it says is that there are more retailers in low income and minority neighborhoods. Why would there not be more retailers in those neighborhoods if there are more players there? It even says they don't know if the lottery does it knowingly or unknowingly.

I think it's also likely a function of poorer people disproportionately living relatively close to corner stores/bodegas/gas stations that sell lotto tickets (and beer and ciggies and corner store food).  But regardless, yeah I think it's pretty obvious poor people disproportionately buy lotto tickets.

I doubt that "proximity to lotto players" is driving much of the location decisions of retailers that happen to distribute lotto tickets.

"The lottery" are run by states, and for as much as I think systems are still very racially biased, the lottery isn't one of them. They will but lottery machines wherever a retailer will have them. They'll put lottery machines in every store in Rodeo Drive if they could. If there are more lottery results in minority communities, that's probably because there's more gas stations and smoke shops in these places, than there are in suburbia.

Clearly poor people play the lottery more. That doesn't mean they are targeted by the lottery.

MIR is spot on here. Also, there will be lotteries in poor areas regardless of the state running them or not. It’s a big part of them existing in the first place. The state couldn’t allow the bookies to “run numbers” w/out getting their cut. It’s the same with state-run casinos aka lottery for rich people.

SNL was unreal. Good choice to let him have an extended monologue. The sketch that he "sat out" might have been the best one. If I have one minor gripe about Chappelle on SNL is that there is a tendency to lean on Chappelle's Show a bit much. The one Chappelle's Show sketch was very good though.

His monologue was mostly very good
