Pool talk - Backyard types only!
« on: June 26, 2020, 10:08:42 AM »
Guys, longtime etc etc....

Let's talk pools.  Looking to possibly get started on the process of getting one.  Starting to do the research on types and stuff.

Who's got 'em, who loves 'em, who hates 'em.

Make me love 'em.

Make me hate 'em.

What Should I make sure to look into.

What should I avoid.

The only thing I know now is that I am looking for something around the 18'x36' size, it's going to be in ground, and it won't be concrete/gunite.

Salt water?  Is that what all the cool kids are doing these days?  Liquid injection chlorine?  Vinyl liner type vs fiberglass?

Give me what you got.

Used to have a pool and I loved it.  Was totally easy to maintain in Texas suburbs with few big trees. Had one in Florida that was a beating to keep clean. It had an old pump and the pollen from the trees made it a daily chore.

Make sure you buy a robot cleaner.

Really wish I had a pool right now as our HOA pool is closed due to The Rona.

What type of pools were they?
What maint issues did you have and did you have technicians give you the "you should have bought XXX instead" when they came to fix anything?

Both pools were plaster in-ground pools.  The one in Texas had waterfall and the one in FL had a cage around it.

I never had to have a tech come out.  We had the pool put in and so all the equipment was new.  I had the light in the pool go out and when I called to have a technician come out, they helped me fix it over the phone.

The equipment on the pool in FL was probably there since the 80s.  We rented that house and so the one time a tech came out he spoke with the landlord, not us.

we have great friends down the street who basically gives us free access to their pool. (same group that likes fancy vacations if you can believe that)

If you do not have natural gas available, do not get a heater.  Electric heaters are garbage.

Just put in a small above ground for my girls cool off in. When I trust the youngest to be able to get herself out, we will move to a house with a pool.  We can’t put one in our yard. I’m already scouting out houses with gunite pools on googlemaps/zillow/realtor.com to find ones where I might go to owner and see if they want to sell. I know multiple people with saltwater and it’s the way to go.

Clams, are you still in KC?  If so who did you use?  Would you recommend them?

What type of pool did you get?  Approx size and shape?

Any options or specialties included in that price?

How long was their leadtime?

i have one.  costs a ton of money for electricity and chemicals and is a pain in the ass 12 months out of the year.  also uses up most of the space in my backyard.

it's nice to swim in for like three months, but it's not even close to worth it.

glad to see you back on goEMAW.

my parents have a pool and it's great.  i love it.  they seem to like it too because all of the kids/grandkids really like going over there.

It's open from about late april-mid october most years.

Sys, are your feelings based on the pool being set up and operated as a water snaketuary or as a actual pool?

Like 3 years ago it was integrated into Saul search but unfortunately the last maintenance window we had 2 years ago still didn’t fix it.
