It kills about 2/3 of smokers. The numbers in Pence's article are incorrect. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that maybe they were acceptable numbers to use in 2001 due to insufficient data, but there was plenty of data to suggest that smoking was dangerous in 2001, and minimizing the risk to "smoking doesn't kill" was disingenuous at best.

You're focusing way more on the health of smoking portion, while the whole point of that was to set up the big invasive government portion.

Anyone remember the stray dog problem in Russia during the winter Olympics and the Western uproar over how Russia had been attempting to deal with it? Well, news out of Russia is that, after a dog tested (questionably) positive for COVID-19, they're now "rounding up stray animals". Never let a crisis go to waste, I guess.
