this is always hilarious to watch with people who have kids and send them to daycare/school for the first time and then the parents have a solid year of being sick 24/7/365 because they've been unexposed to kid germs their entire lives. I can laugh at it now because I lived it.

I would say if you have friends in India, send them your extra masks

Is Michigan getting better? Because they were getting rocked.

A conservative guy I used to work with there had his dad die from Covid a couple weeks ago. For whatever reason he shared on it social media as "my dad passed due to complications after contacting Covid pneumonia", my guess is because he didn't want to say it was from Covid

If variants was really the #1 concern, we probably should have been shipping vaccines to places like Brazil and India like weeks ago.

Why? Variants can come from anywhere. There isn't anything unique about Brazil, India, or Rhode Island that makes it more susceptible to variants, we've had one too. The best way to halt the variants is just to get our population vaccinated.
Because our vaccine supply is already greater than the demand. We’d get more shots in arms sending them elsewhere than trying out some media campaign.

FWIW - I personally don’t think variants should be the #1 concern. I just don’t understand that point being used to argue that we need to get from something like 50% of Americans vaccinated to 70% when the virus is running rampant elsewhere.

Nationwide there's no way that's true. Many Americans have been vaccine eligible for all of 36 hours. The places that had widespread early eligibility weren't, for the most part, in the most densely populated areas in the country. We also still have 50-100 million teens and adolescents who need to be vaccinated.

I was mostly using the term colloquially. Obviously if all vaccine manufacture halted and doses for those under 16 are approved, we probably wouldn’t have enough for all willing. My point is that we could have been diverting plenty of the vaccines we have been making for a while now and be no worse off for it.

But my real point is that warp speeding US inoculation is clearly not the most efficient way to stave off variants when you have massive outbreaks in other places with much more densely populated areas. I think that’s a pretty clear example of the fear porn tactics that do nothing to move the needle for non-vaxxers.

not sure on MI specifically but we were increasing hospitalizations which was concerning for sure but it has come back down to net flat (also not great). Have to imagine with the amount of vaccinations that doesn't pop again (and if it does it's really bad news because something isn't working).

I'm surprised vaxxed that got Covid had to go to the hospital unless they caught it before it fully kicked in.

Same.  That is odd that there are multiple hospitalizations of the fully vaxxed.  I feel like that would be a big story

Received second Moderna cocktail this morning.  It has been flowing around my body for over 3 hrs.  So far feeling great!

Update....
This 2nd dose knocked me on my ass!  I've been fighting a fever and severe body aches since 2p yesterday afternoon.

Um what?  The vaccines are not 100% effective against severe cases, that isn’t news.

https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/548440-cdc-5800-breakthrough-covid-19-cases-documented-among-millions-who-are

Quote
The breakthrough COVID-19 infections reported to the CDC were out of more than 75 million fully vaccinated individuals in the U.S., occurring in less than 0.008 percent of fully vaccinated people. Hospitalizations have occurred in 0.0005 percent of all full vaccinations and deaths in almost 0.0001 percent.

I don’t think many are really arguing otherwise. Just means the anecdotal stories are entirely plausible.

Multiple instances of fully vaccinated folks getting admitted due to Covid in one hospital isn't plausible.

The vaccine had high efficacy at preventing hospitalization and death in people who did get sick. No one who got COVID-19 at least 4 weeks after receiving the J&J/Janssen vaccine had to be hospitalized.

Did anyone say that either? I assumed the person katpappy referenced had just read the same news stories.
