Can confirm 100% on mask usage in WY.  That percentage actually seems really high.

I remember being freaked out about benji's shoulder to shoulder Wyoming bar photo. In places like that (and rural Kansas) it's pretty much a big problem or no problem

Birx again talks about spread is mostly in private homes and gatherings. Could closing bars and restaurants make the winter worse? Is it better to ensure these public spaces are keeping people apart, good ventilation instead of closing up indoors and push people to house gatherings?

File it under spitballing idea.

I think you're misinterpreting what she said (assuming this is what you're referring to):

Quote
Birx said it’s possible some of the recent spread is happening in people’s homes, during family gatherings, as the weather gets colder.

Quote
“It won’t be as simple as closing public spaces because public spaces … were very safe over the summer and probably remain safe,” Birx said. “This is really something that has happened in the last three to four weeks. What has happened in the last three to four weeks is that people have moved their social gatherings indoors.”

That said, your theory isn't very good. Keeping bars open will lead to larger gatherings from a less-bubbled population than indoor social gatherings in homes.

Fair enough.  I can't help but think we need to approach this whole thing a bit differently though.  What we're doing isn't working very well.

Of course in my mind a quick turnaound test readily available is our missing piece.

rapid testing would help a lot. That Harvard guy talking about the paper saliva tests seems promising but just kind of fizzled out.

And I'd argue what California and New York are doing is working well. Some businesses are definitely hurting but when you set criteria for certain things to reopen and actually stick to those criteria you can maintain really low numbers. Things are pretty stable and we might as well ride it out till the chip.

What doesn't work is doing what KC did by setting criteria for schools to reopen and just not following them at all or having giant motorcycle rallies or having bars open while cases are raging.

Pfft.   As of 10/7/2020 not a single manufacturer of at home Covid-19 rapid tests had filed paperwork with the FDA for review.

The FDA has said since JULY they are ready, willing and able to review any at home testing submission from any producer.

The FDA has even told possible producers that they'll accept and review less sensitive tests.

Of course producers want the FDA to lower their standards.

Fine, but we'll likely then be dealing with a litany of false positives/negatives.   Key personnel hold up thinking they have the RONA and don't.   People out and about who have tested negative at home, but actually do have the virus.

The CoronaBro's think this is all so easy.

South Korea in March

Quote
The mobile centres conducted the tests free of charge within 10 minutes, with the results were sent to people’s phones within 24 hours. By mid-March more than 270,000 people had been tested.

There was a mini-meltdown when it was found that Abbot's 15 minute test was only 85% accurate.

BTW, back in March.   I called and got a Covid testing appointment, was tested within the hour, had the results less than 24 hours later.    S. Korea was talking about a testing volume of about 15,000 a day if I'm reading that non linked quote correctly?     The U.S. tests at a rate of around 1.2 to 1.4 million a day, now.

Answer below if you want a coin flip at home test?   Who wants to run around in a world full of people thinking they're not negative based on a coin flip (or near coin flip) at home test created on reduced FDA standards?  Again, please answer below.

good read

That's fantastic.   I just can't understand why Don Trump and the FDA hasn't approved a test that (and I quote), "exists only in the imaginations of those who think it’s vital for safely reopening the US and on the drawing boards of biotech companies working toward that goal".

i believe this is the most officially recorded cases in a day ever.  caveat, though that some states didn't report for a day or two so it's a bit backloaded.

Results in 24 hours equals rapid test (Phil Titola).

Phil insists FDA approve home rapid tests that don’t exist yet based on lower FDA standards.   Equaling more false positive/negative.
