Pregame, the announcers thought the US needed to score 5 to make it a "respectable" victory...

I wonder if goal differential is important in the World Cup?

The excuses pouring forth for why they needed to perpetrate that beatdown are

Worried about goal differential   They have a 9 goal lead on the next highest GF and are 11 up in their group.

I suspect Sweden will have to rub it in as well, just like "classy" USA did.   Albeit we'll have to see if the Swede's act like goal 11 is the cup clincher.

It's gonna take a more compelling controversy than this to get my household to tune in.

Pour on 100 if you can.  The US women compete in obscurity for most of their careers.  When they get to be on a stage like the Olympics or World Cup, they should kick every damn goal they can.  If people are worried about the Thai team's feelings, they shouldn't invite as many teams to the tournament in a sport that is so unbalanced.

I think Rapinoe's celebration might have been a little overboard for as experienced as she is, but that is about it.

Isn’t it a running clock in this thing? If so, and if the rationale was to bank as many goals as possible, they shouldn’t have been celebrating at all. Get the ball back in play ASAP and score more.

If you want them to stop scoring and celebrating, stop them from scoring. It’s not a rough ridin' 11 and under rec league. It’s a world comp and goal differential matters. Let the kids play.

We did the thing the Hawks do before every game in Mighty Ducks where we would get within earshot of the other loser team and on 3 break the huddle with "It's not worth winning if you can't WIN BIG!" Then we went on to win big pretty much every game. It was great. I can't imagine having to play half of a game at half speed to make the other team feel better about themselves, like they are one of those kids with a disability who get to hit a home run in the baseball game or something.
