watched Carousel the other night. really, a couple of great numbers in this. If I Loved You, June Is Busting Out All Over (or maybe it's called "Just Because it's June" -- I don't know) and You'll Never Walk Alone, are all pretty great. The June one is one of my favorite dance scenes in any musical.
All that said, this movie did NOT age well.
SPOILERS: the protagonist is completely devoid of any redeeming qualities. He hits his wife. He loses his job and refuses to even look for more work. He's manipulative. He's insulting. He participates in a hold up involving a knife, which leads to his death, leaving his pregnant wife behind. Later on, after returning to earth and striking his daughter, the wife and daughter both agree that "sometimes, when a man hits you, even if he hits you hard, it doesn't hurt, and actually feels like a kiss." When I heard that line, my mouth hit the floor. Mind you, this is the PROTAGONIST. R&H were apparently trying to portray him in a net positive light.
If you're interested, just watch the June song on youtube. Check out "If I Loved You," and "You'll Never Walk Alone" on spotify.
