Yes - that was awesome. It's also in the book, so clearly they cast Sean Bean specifically for that reason.

i haven't seen it yet but it looks an awful lot like Gravity w/ sandra bullock.

No spoiler comparison between Martian and Gravity: I enjoyed Martian more, but Gravity was way more intense. Gravity was 2 hours of claustrophobia and vertigo (expecially in 3D) - Martian takes place on Earth and Mars and has a lot more legroom. The Martian cast is better (and more). Martian is funnier. Martian's science is more accurate overall.

I really liked Gravity, too, but they probably should have named it something else if they intended to completely ignore Newton's Laws in a number of key moments.
