My brothers friends
« on: January 14, 2019, 09:22:19 PM »
My brother graduated from a small private high school in 1980.  All of the guys in his class were very close friends since grade school and have remained so evan after scattering across the map the past 40 years.  Almost all of them have been successful in life.  They were a hard partying dope smoking beer drinking coke snorting fun loving bunch in their youth and it was a blast being a much younger brother having a front row seat to all the shenanigans.  Some never left Kansas and became Doctors and Lawyers
some took over family oil businesses, several moved out to California to become computer programmers and such.

Recently a beloved member of the group separated from a tech job he had worked for probably 25 years
making good money, living on a beach in malibu and still smoking dope.  This guy has always beeen really cool, he dabbles in ju jits su (prolly spelled wrong) anyway has plenty of money and a good life.  Well apparently with his free time he has jumped head first into anti Trump politics.

These guys have never talked politics much, they were all brought up to know its not a great topic socially
and not really that fun anyway.  Well Malibu starts going off on his buds in texts, being condescending and pretty rabid.  His friends pretty much didnt engage with him in the conversation but Malibu just keeps firing at them like they are in the comment section of the huffington post.

For a week or so his friends back channeled each other wondering if Malibu was alright.  A week later two others in California and two in Kansas have very straightforwardly told Malibu that the way he is behaving is not ok, its not about the politics (none of them have ever engaged).  There has been speculation about could Malibu be doing something other than smoking dope?  could he be mentally ill ( again not about the politics, more about the sdk style mania).  My brother was one that called him down and then told me about it but Malibu has just kind of ignored all these warnings and continues his Trump rant.

We all care alot about Malibu but don't know what to do.  He is alienating his friends, he hasn't seen his live in girlfriend in 2 weeks.  We all have fun effing with each other here, but this is the first time i've seen someone I know lose it from a combination of politics and apparently bbsing (im guessing that is where he became comfortable with his new communication style.)  Has anyone else seen anything like this irl?

I have not experienced anything like that 27. Anecdotally, I have heard lots of similar stories with people's parents jumping on the trump train and ruining all their relationships trying to force it on others.

It's sad

Only 1 of my conservative friends is a Trump supporter.  If he starts going on a Trump is great rant, everyone mocks him until he eventually shuts up.

maybe i'm in the minority, but i think it makes perfect sense to sever casual relationships with people that you have little in common with ideologically.

very odd to me, but i mostly assume that they're united by a shared lust for power and influence that supersedes any of their ideological differences.

I don't particularly want any relationship with extremists of politics or religion. We aren't just talking about a few political differences, Malibu, as described, is far past that.

Trump as a politician and as a cult brand promotes extremism, either for or against, by design. It's gross.
