Ideally, the Republican party would believe in traditional, liberal capitalist economics. Free trade, open borders (to the greatest extent reasonable), socialized healthcare, socialized agriculture (this one is status quo), equal rights, decriminalized drug use, and foreign policy that flexes our strength without putting boots on the ground, like what is currently happening in Ukraine.

Anything anti-trans, anti_gay, or racist, etc. is a complete non starter. Like as shitty as most dems are, they aren't pushing "don't say gay" laws or laws against trans kids playing sports, which are laws that are solely based on hate

An "ideal" opposition almost seems like an oxymoron. Opposition is only a good thing because of how flawed the parties are. Re-wind the Republican party about 10-20 years and that would be fine with me, with some appropriate social adjustments with respect to gay, trans, abortions, etc. that I think are generally reflected in the population today.

I think I would need to microdose shrooms in order to expand my mind enough to be able to imagine the GOP actually having a policy position on anything. For my entire adult life it's been 100% reactionary fear porn and fighting the good fight against imaginary boogeymen

Actually being the "party of fiscal responsibility" would be a start. Then withdrawing from these stupid culture wars would be good. Getting out of American bedrooms and bodies would be a plus. No longer forcing Christian morality as policy would be a bonus. Ceasing trying to unwind long-recognized rights that people have organized their lives around could also be beneficial.
