Betting on games is the best way to go in Vegas. That way when you're running around and partying with your boys, you can high five together when you see the game in the corner of the bar while making out with chicks.

I plan on making a ton of money betting on all the conference championship games.

I went to three(!) shows because I went with family:

Mystere: Great Cirque show. I'd never been to one and was amazed.

Piff the Magic Dragon: Magic and comedy that one of my kids had heard of, I hadn't. It was like in a comedy club setup in the flamingo. Very funny and pretty good tricks but a weird crowd. For whatever reason his tricks didn't seem to fit with the vibe of the room. But definitely worth seeing and probably my favorite.

Blue Man Group: probably my kids' favorite. It's pretty out there and kind of amazing that it's so mainstream. I liked when they did physical comedy and just banged on drums and hated when they used their shitty Vegas band.

Was the shuttle running at Zion or did you get to drive in the main canyon?  Hike any?

had to take the shuttle but really liked it. We got there pretty early and it was way easier than driving would have been because it was the day after Thanksgiving and really busy. Like we walked right onto a shuttle when we parked and never waited more than 5 minutes for a shuttle from stop to stop in the canyon. We were with smaller kids so mostly did pretty easy hikes, the most difficult was Watchman as most trails listed as "moderate" were closed. Also did Canyon Overlook and saw some of the bighorn sheep along with Weeping Rock, Emerald Pool, and the River walk one.

Trip coming up this January with the mrs. and looking for recommendos.

Scenario: Planning to stay in Cesar's palace and would prefer to stick around the strip.

Things we want to do:
-One of the cirque shows (already seen O)
-Magician, comedian, both?
-FOOOOOD (got a food tour lined up already for one evening)
-Sports gambling (it's NFC/AFC conference championship weekend!)
-Texas Hold 'em tournaments
-Cheap table games

GO!

* Love is the only Cirque show I've seen so I'd say that.
* Never been to any of those shows. If seinfeld is in residence at Caesars
* Cosmo has the best selection of quality reasonable priced food. Any specific type of food? Either way eat at secret pizza. 3rd floor next to blue ribbon....long hallway. No sign.
* Mirage book is good but not so good with drink tickets.
* No idea on hold em
* Casino Royale

Piff is a good magician and comedian.

I don't know why you're doing a food tour just one night but Mon Ami Gabi in Paris was a random excellent meal we had that didn't require reservations far in advance. (I'd recommend figuring out where you want to eat and make reservations early).

Good tip on booking reservations. The main reason we’d only do the food tour one night is time. The one we’re doing takes 3 hours. Also, need some flexibility on Sunday to watch the playoff games we’ll be betting on.

-go see carrot top at the luxor. wtf, carrot top? i thought the same thing. but yes. i lived in vegas five years and visit dozens of times per year. it is the best show i've been to other than random one-offs, and have never encountered anyone who didn't like it.

-best sportsbooks in town currently: 1) westgate (but off strip); 2) cosmo; 3) caesars (but now requires seat reservations); 4) wynn (but they still give significant play to horses); 5) mirage. for best chance at good seating, i'd uber to the westgate. in addition to the main area sportsbook (which is massive), they also have movie theater style seating in the main casino area (remains a well-kept secret) w/ finger foods, beer buckets, etc. you will be guaranteed to find a good seat at westgate w the shortest lines possible during one of the busiest weekends (sportsbook-wise) of the year.

-beatles love is a good circus show. but i'm not a big circus show guy.

-the high roller (world's tallest ferris wheel) thing is actually pretty cool. i'd recommend it, but get the unlimited booze one that comes with a bartender. it's fairly inexpensive.

-for poker, these sites are great (updated daily): https://www.pokeratlas.com/poker-tournaments/las-vegas-nevada/upcoming

-food is easy. no shortage of great restaurants. if you want a quick lunch w huge menu, grand lux cafe (in venetian) is a solid option.

as always, slip a few $20s between your license and credit card at check-in and if asked, steer them to the type of upgrade you're looking for. here's caesars' success rate: http://www.frontdesktip.com/las-vegas/caesars-palace/

it sounds like you're going between jan 15-jan 21 (?), which should be a great time to go. there's a massive convention (180k people) the week before you arrive, and a few other big ones toward the end of the month.

i'd also recommend a golden knights game. they play the penguins on saturday jan 19th.

don't play airport slots. tightest machines in town. :)

Now those are some hot tips!

Is there like no chance of getting a seat at Cesar’s without a reservation? Ideally I’d like to take in a little bit of the atmosphere but mostly just place a few bets and monitor the games while doing other stuff (with the ability to peak in if something gets exciting). I don’t necessarily want to be glued to the TV unless the Chiefs are in the AFC championship game.

a bunch of us went for a CFB saturday about six weeks ago, we paid $144 per seat, which reserves your spot for the day. virtually every seat was reserved and there wasn't much for the general public until much later in the day, when there were just a handful of games left.

you can see the reservation prices here, it looks like NFL playoffs is priced similarly: https://www.caesars.com/caesars-palace/casino/race-and-sports-book#.XBKEjZNKjR0

honestly, between the long sportsbook lines, the good-not-great service, and the lack of food options (you have to walk to the food court about 250 yards away), i'd put the caesars experience solidly behind a few of the others on the list.

we went to westgate the next day for NFL sunday. we got a VIP booth for i want to say $700, but the entire cost of the box goes toward food and beverage. we had seven of us, stuffed our face with food from 10am to 4pm, drank from beginning to end, and still didn't use up the allotment. service was great, seating was great, views were great, atmosphere was great. but again, a box isn't necessary to enjoy westgate; you'll find good enough seating on your own.

here's a decent overview of various books on the strip: https://vegashax.com/2018/09/10/best-sportsbooks-for-football/

the books that i personally like to support in town are south point and westgate. both have top-notch staffs who focus on customer service and aren't trying to nickel-and-dime their guests to death. i understand why many books (not just caesars) are going the reserve-a-seat route (caesars, for example, can profit roughly 50k per football weekend on reserved seats if they sell out), but like most decisions casinos in town are making, these are short-sighted moves that are turning people away.

there are lots of guys (and gals potentially!), similar to myself, who go to vegas primarily to bet sports and watch games - particularly if it's a big sports weekend. but between paying (constantly rising) resort fees, paying for WiFi, paying for daily parking, paying for a seat in the sportsbook, paying for drinks (small bets used to get you a handful of drinks; now at many properties $200 gets you one drink ticket), many people are deciding they'd rather just go to a bar.

they'll still get my money because i'm a sicko, but just pointing out the error of their ways.

sorry, didn't respond to your specific question and instead went on my anti-vegas rant. :D

there's a horizontal bar directly behind the caesars sportsbook seating. you can just stand and hang back there and you'll have perfectly fine views of the screen as long as you don't mind being on your feet; and the casino floor (in both directions) is literally steps away.

if you plan to bet sports at any property, i'd stop by a few of the different books on a weekday morning and deposit to the apps. caesars has an app; and then MGM has an app (you can sign up at either bellagio or mirage, which are on opposite sides of caesars). then across the street, venetian (CG technology) has an app; and then finally, William Hill has apps (and kiosks) at Casino Royale, literally five steps into the building as you walk in off the strip.

the downside to this, obviously, is that this eliminates the thrill of walking to the counter after a winning bet and cashing your ticket while trying to act like you win all the time.

So you have to be in the casino to place a bet & collect using the app?
