Maybe the best leader Kansas State has ever had or will ever have.

I played craps at the same table as Pat in a Des Moines casino the night before KSU @ ISU in Oct 2016. Was everything you would want it to be.

I've done that a couple times and it was pretty fun.  Did we ever do that together?

I don't have any cool PB stories other than I saw him at the Union all the time and sometimes he'd pop into the radio studio to request a song.  :D

In the very early 90's, a young Pete and his folks were touring K-State, and Pat Bosco stopped what he was doing, took us aside, and spent 30 minutes talking us into K-State versus the other schools we were considering.  Little did he know (but probably he did) that it was the act of spending the time to talk to us that was the most convincing, and not necessarily the content of the conversation.

This same thing happened to me. He chatted with me, ironically enough, on what's now, Bosco Plaza. When I started that next fall I ran into him again and he remembered the conversation. The guy is the absolute best.

pat bosco facts:

-he has giant hands
-he has a consulting company that I think makes a shitload of money as a side hustle (or at least used to)
-he graduated from Nebraska and when his name is mentioned everyone at Nebraska rolls their eyes like cartoonishly big and then says something about how he won't shut up about K-State whenever they talk to him.

According to a MHS townie rumor at the time, Bosco's son, who was very not good at basketball, curiously made the MHS (varsity?) basketball team not long after Bosco made a sizable monetary donation to the school. Honest to God, I remember a number of times when MHS students rolled their eyes at the mere mention of the name "Bosco."

If we ever get another cat, I am absolutely going to name it Cat Bosco.  Also had great interactions with Pat before signing up at Wildcats U.  He presented me with my first scholarship.....

This is a second hand story and I'm not super confident that it was about little Bosco. Possibly someone else. Fairly sure, though.

Some friends of mine were on an overnight debate trip and shared a room with little Bosco. They go to bed and turn the lights out. It's totally dark, can't see anything. Then, they hear movement and heavy breathing. It doesn't stop. More movement. More heavy breathing. Finally, one of them is like, "BOSCO! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?" He replies matter of factly, "I'm doin' sets."

I was in school with his daughter, no stories about her banging out sets in the middle of the night, she is just an all around solid citizen, as one would expect.

pat bosco is one of the most inspiring people i've ever met. his enthusiasm for kansas state university is unmatched by anybody, anywhere, probably at any time.

i will never forget my first visit to k-state in july of 2005. i was coming off the most miserable year of my life. i grew up in NY and was unexpectedly rejected by the only college i applied to. i landed at a small private school in a shitty industrial town in central NY, played college golf on a team full of hockey players, and spent many evenings nursing crap beers with complete losers. i wanted to transfer badly, but had nowhere to go.

then the chiefs, my favorite team then and now, made a big splash in free agency, signing kendrell bell (lol), patrick surtain and later sammy knight, on top of drafting derrick johnson. i had convinced myself that the chiefs were going to win the super bowl and i wanted to watch it up close. and that's when i made the decision to apply to kansas state.

a month later, to my total surprise, i got an email acceptance letter (i didn't know k-state took literally everybody at the time), and immediately began preparing how to tell my parents that i was about to move halfway across the country to a school that i only applied to due to their proximity to the chiefs*

*i didn't know KU was closer.

my mom was unconvinced by my pitch, but allowed me to preliminarily enroll and agreed to accompany me to orientation. we arrived to the student union an hour early, and that's when we ran into pat bosco. he stopped us, introduced himself by basically shouting his name, and then asked where we were from. turns out, we all came from the same places. we chatted for a good 10 minutes and my mom thought he was the nicest guy she ever saw. it was a fantastic first impression.

then the orientation proceedings began.

pat bosco marched out in front of a packed room like a rock star. he performed the fight song. he told us how great k-state was. and within five minutes, i swear to god he had my mom thinking this place was fuckin harvard! he would rattle off program after program and tell us where it ranked nationally. and every...single...program...somehow, someway...was in the top 5.

"ANYBODY HERE ENROLLING IN THE ENGINEERING PROGRAM? WELL, IT'S TOP 5!"

"COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE? TOP 5!"

"OUR SCHOOL NEWSPAPER? TOP 5!"

every program, every department, every faculty member, every building, every facility, was somehow top 5! before long, the whole room of potential students and parents were finishing his sentences for him, screaming out "top 5!" to anything that came out of his mouth. my mom kept looking over to me, nodding in approval, of this guy, these programs, this school, this state, this decision! i wasn't just going to a college in kansas. i was going to the best college on earth!

the chiefs went 10-6 but missed the playoffs. :frown:

why were you already a chiefs fan j rake?

it started with this: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/199110070kan.htm

my big thing as a 5-year old was to be a contrarian heel (so basically i haven't changed). everybody in my area liked either the giants or the bills. the chiefs played a huge game vs buffalo on this particular night, at arrowhead, and the place was just a madhouse. so what began as rooting against the bills turned into rooting for the chiefs. it was my first TV exposure to arrowhead that i can remember. i loved the crowd, loved the helmet, loved the logo, loved the uniforms, loved the energy, loved that kansas city was in missouri and not kansas, loved the name marty schottenheimer, just all of it.
