They were both in the car and their were two 16-year old girls. Would have gotten away with it too, if at 3am those parked cars hadn't jumped in front of the suv they were "borrowing" from a guy who lived 3000 miles away.

"Borrowed" from a former KU basketball player / current athletic program booster, who claimed he "sold" the SUV to the Morris twins.  Except the Morris twins never bothered to get title changed or pay the required taxes.  Or failed to show payment for the vehicle.  KU faithful bent over backwards to explain how normal that situation was.

Work on your "c" greg.
Fifteen minutes later, when the Kansas locker room opened its doors to the media, the Jayhawks were still crying. Literally, bawling. All of them. I've never seen anything like it, and I've seen devastated college locker rooms -- after losses in the Final Four, the national championship game -- ever

I haven't followed the trial at all as far as who was being accused of what.

With Gatto being charged with this:

Quote
Gatto, Code and Dawkins were accused of felony charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud by paying money from Adidas to the families of recruits to ensure they signed with Adidas-sponsored schools, and then with the sneaker company and certain financial planners and agents once they turned pro.

The jury found Gatto guilty on all three of his counts, while Code and Dawkins were found guilty on two counts.

Quote
Gatto, the sneaker company's director of global sports marketing for basketball, also was accused of conspiring with former Adidas consultant T.J. Gassnola to pay $90,000 to former Kansas prospect Billy Preston's mother and $20,000 to current Jayhawks player Silvio De Sousa's guardian.

Gatto's attorney saying this in closing arguments seems counterproductive:

Quote
During closing arguments last week, one of Gatto's attorneys, Michael Schachter, told the jury that Gatto approved the payments to players' families at the request of coaches, including Self.

Bad strategy?

^the defense's argument was that they didn't defraud the schools--which is what they were charged with--since the coaches approved of the payments.  i.e., there was no victim of a crime.

I hope KU is able to obtain restitution from the perpetrators of these terrible crimes.

T-Y.  Sounds like the government countered with that Seff was an additional criminal that victimized the squawks.

Quote
Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward Diskant told the jury that even if the coaches were complicit in the pay-for-scheme, that doesn't excuse the defendants.

"The coaches at the universities weren't allowed to be doing this," Diskant said.

Has anyone set up a GoFundMe page to collect funds for our unfortunate little brother who was victimized by Adidas?  They defrauded KU by placing NBA caliber players on the KU men's BB team.  Shame on those big city shysters.

Why would anyone think a verdict (criminal conviction) is somehow good for kubball?

Oh, that guy your coach was texting with about paying players? Yeah, he was found guilty of multiple federal crimes related to, get this, paying players.

Good straight-to-nearly-the-bottom summation here from yahoo sports:

Quote
The verdict is a major victory for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York, which took a three-year FBI investigation ripe with wire-tapped phone calls, secretly video-taped meetings and two undercover agents to make the violation of NCAA rules into a federal case.

The government convinced the jury that when the men paid the families of recruits to attend specific colleges, they were rendering those athletes ineligible per NCAA rules. As such, the schools were unwittingly signing and playing players that exposed them to NCAA sanctions. Because the schools receive federal funding, this became a federal fraud case.

The defendants offered an impassioned counter-argument during the three-week trial that by directing top talent to college teams they were trying to help, not harm, the universities. They also tried to present to the jury the underworld of college basketball where head and assistant coaches seek out the help of shoe companies and runners to help with recruiting, and even if payments aren’t directly discussed they are assumed.

The jury, which knew little about college basketball before the trial, agreed with the government and lead prosecutor, assistant U.S. attorney Ted Diskant.

Self has been able to stay out of this because he is the snitch. No other explanation.

Wish you could have heard his 810 interview today before this. Man, he was sweating it out all day. Longest pauses of his life.
