Top 10 Coaches in College Basketball
« on: May 25, 2010, 12:42:12 AM »
I was recently in a conversation debating the Top Ten Coaches in Basketball and I'm curious which coaches EMAW would put as their Top Ten, and in what order, as well. I have gotten my Top 5 down and haven't solidified 6-10 yet.

1) Tom Izzo
2) Coach K
3) Rick Pitino
4) Roy Williams
5) Coach Cal
6)
7)
8)
9)
10)

Please edit out Cal and include Huggins and I might participate.

Pitino is ranked too high.  as is Izzo. K has earned the #1 spot imo.  add:  Boeheim, Calhoun, Donovan, Self, and Huggins to round out your 10.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

New warning: Don't get in a fight with someone who doesn't even need to bother to buy ink.

I agree with Izzo #1

He may not have as many championships as some of the others, but god damn he's a genius in getting his teams up for the tournament.

Yeah, he has 6 final fours in his 15 years which is pretty absurd.  I give him an edge over K probably because I like him more but really can argue it either way.  K has a 77.8% NCAA tourny winning percentage to Izzo's 74.5%.

Gary Williams can't even recruit his own back yard and Rick Barnes can't challenge the conf elite while getting his pick of the TX talent pool.

Double fail.

People (football only fans) think Texas has always been a basketball juggernaut but they have pretty much sucked for their entire existance prior to Barnes.  Their last Final Four before Rick was in 1947.  Barnes is 138-57 in Big 12 play and has made the NCAA every season.  43% of Texas' NCAA tourny appearences have been under Barnes.

Yeah, see post directly above yours re. the Capel debate.  I'm saying Barnes is a pretty good coach.

You should really look at Capel's entire record.  You look at his Big 12 w%,, you would see he is a slightly above average B12 coach.  BUT YOU CAN'T COUNT SEASONS WITH BLAKE GRIFFIN!!!!

barnes is a decent coach but he's proven to underperform with elite talent.  there's no excuse for his recruiting strategy leading to how his team was put together last year.  he certainly, in my mind, doesn't deserve to be mentioned when discussing the top 10 coaches in the game.

ya recruiting is part of coaching and i'd give him points for signing elite talent if he was doing it somewhere other than a school such as UT.
