Greg Seltzer's series on top USMNT players going into '18 has been interesting. Bolded are his picks to make the 23. Anyone not currently eligible won't make his list.

Striker: Jozy Altidore, Terrence Boyd, Aron Johansson, Juan Agudelo, Jack McInerney
(Also being monitored: Gyasi Zardes, Victor Pineda, Alonso Hernández, Lynden Gooch, Jordan Morris, Omar Salgado, Zach Pfeffer, Ben Spencer, Jack McBean)

Left midfield: Julian Green, Paul Arriola, Brek Shea, Joseph Gyau, Mario Rodriguez
(Also being monitored: Lee Nguyen, Kainoa Bailey, Jose Villarreal, Bobby Wood)

Right midfield: Fabian Johnson, Rubio Rubin, Josh Gatt, Harrison Shipp, Joe Corona
(Also being monitored: Graham Zusi, Daniel Cuevas, Andrew Wooten)

Center attacking midfield: Luis Gil, Mikkel Diskerud, Alejandro Bedoya, Kelyn Rowe, Junior Flores
(Also being monitored: Sebastian Lletget, Duane Holmes, Emerson Hyndman, Dillon Powers, Alejandro Guido)

Box to box midfield: Michael Bradley, Wil Trapp, Fernando Arce Jr, Dax McCarty, Sacha Kljestan
(Also being monitored: Benji Joya, Stuart Holden, Mikey Lopez)

Defensive midfield: Geoff Cameron, Danny Williams, Amobi Okugo, Maurice Edu, Perry Kitchen
(Also being monitored: Caleb Stanko, Alfredo Morales, Jonathan Spector)

Left back: Marc Pelosi, Chris Klute, Greg Garza, Michael Orozco Fiscal, Juan Pablo Ocegueda
(Also being monitored: Seth Sinovic)

Left center back: John Brooks, Matt Besler, Erik Palmer-Brown, Tim Ream, Chris Schuler
(Also being monitored: George John)

Right center back: Omar Gonzalez, Will Packwood, Shane O'Neill, Matt Hedges, Michael Parkhurst
(Also being monitored: Walker Zimmerman)

Right back: Deandre Yedlin, Eric Lichaj, Timmy Chandler, Andrew Farrell, Sheanon Williams
(Also being monitored: Zarek Valentin, Kofi Sarkodie, Josh Williams, Chance Myers)

Goalkeeper: Brad Guzan, Sean Johnson, Steve Clark, Bill Hamid, Cody Cropper
(Also being monitored: Dan Kennedy, Tally Hall, Clint Irwin, Luis Robles, Zac McMath, Caleb Patterson-Sewell)

From the final post (strikers)

"This is a little tricky. Here you see Altidore still listed as starter and Boyd (the most prototypical #9 of current pedigree past him) in the top spots. Does that mean I foresee AJ and Agudelo missing out in 2018? Not necessarily, not by a long shot. It is quite possible we will see these guys share time at other positions in Russia - the former perhaps underneath the striker and the latter out wide."

Don’t expect Green to play much vs. MLS All-Stars, either. Per @MonicaGonzo, Pep said he could get "5, 10, 15 mins.” #usmnt

Hoping for Kempin and EPB both starting. It'll be interesting to see where O'Neill plays. That'll play a big part in whether EPB is the starter. O'Neill can play CB, RB, and DM. He prefers midfield, but he's best at CB (like Okugo). I think Delgado has been playing RB for Chivas.

Could see Kempin; Miller, EPB, Zimmerman, Delgado with O'Neill/Trapp in central midfield, and Yedlin on the wing or wide midfield.

dobber toddler will keep me posting in here for years (unless he plays baseball or something, then I can screw up a different thread) (also, dobberette will likely cause me to get a pintrest account, unless she starts playing with more HEART)

(Was that good cross posting 42?)

Quote from: Greg Seltzer's final 23 for Russia
G - Guzan, Johnson, Clark

D - Yedlin, Lichaj, Gonzalez, Packwood, Brooks, Besler, Pelosi, Klute

M - Cameron, Williams, Bradley, Trapp, Gil, Diskerud

A - Johnson, Rubin, Green, Altidore, Boyd, Jóhannsson

Looks pretty great. Would take. Best part is Bradley not playing the number 10 role. Hopefully one or two of the dual nationals (Nagbe, Zelalem, Fagundez) make it. I don't think Fagundez will be good enough, but the other two could be.

I feel like he's sleeping on Hamid who has looked better recently than Johnson (and is younger).

dobberjr is pretty pumped for this weekend's tourney to start. I'm guessing he'll score 7 goals in the 4 games.

Odd since he isn't playing that for USMNT anymore, at least not in any competition that Jurgen deems important.

He didn't play any RB at the WC. Had at least one start at CB and CDM.

Yeah I know, that was my point.  He started the first two matches at CB and was rough ridin' horrible. He was benched for Germany and then played right mid against Belgium

Pretty sure he played center mid against Belgium but I haven't looked it up. Maybe the reason he wasn't that good was he plays almost exclusively right back for Stoke. He looked great at center back in the games leading up to Brazil.

9-2 and 10-1. I wasn't there to provide you all with a great recap per usual, but dobberjr had 3 assists and 2 goals. He said his area for improving was that he lunged (stabbed?) at the ball twice on d and got burned. I think the two toughest games are tomorrow and I'll be there to keep you all up to date on the action as it unfolds.
