Paid for a seat but not allowed to use it, seems pretty easy to see who is a dick here

try showing up to a flight that I bought a ticket for under my name and see what happens.

Yeah, I understand that part and there is some federal regulation or something probably, but it's still stupid. If you buy a ticket for you and your wife, but decide to take your girlfriend instead, you should be able to.

Did the older "use" his ticket on the earlier flight?

i'm assuming they paid (if anything) a transfer fee of $50 for him to take the earlier flight

My understanding is that they paid for the older son for this flight and then kept that booking but also paid for a flight earlier for him.

throw the car seat with the kid in it into the ocean. don't get me wrong, I don't wish the kid harm, but his parents should suffer that horrific ordeal so they'll learn how to properly manage the airline reservation system.

that's not the way it works though and this incident is only unique because the parents were dicks and there was a baby involved and people don't care enough to really understand what happened so they just watch a thirty second video and then assume the airline was in the wrong (which they weren't).

I'm totally onboard with it being a stupid rule though. would love to have it changed.

no, they bought a normal ticket on the earlier flight to send the older kid home for the whole and express intention of sitting the infant in the older kid's seat on the original flight (because that flight was sold out and they couldn't buy another ticket for the infant on that one).

if you're extra fat they tell you to buy two seats.  is the fat guy's left ass cheek thrown off the plane while they sit an overbooked passenger in his second seat?

How does that work when booking? Can you book two seats for the same person?

it's "unique" because it's an infant, not an unrelated adult.  there is a valid safety rationale (not saying it's justified, but there is a logical rationale) for not allowing unrelated adults to exchange tickets.  that didn't happen here.  the infant boarded under a valid ticket as a lap baby and the parents then wanted to sit it in the vacant seat that they paid for.  the airline preferred to sit another customer in that seat instead.

they let you buy two seats if you want elbow room or for whatever weird ass reason you might have.  this is the same.

then assume the airline was in the wrong (which they weren't).

leaving every other consideration aside, the airline is in the wrong for having that bitch come up to the parents and flat lie her ass off to try and get them to accede to their demands that they surrender the seat.

How did anyone know? Kids aren't required to have IDs. Was the older kid an adult? Or did the parents just eff up by not keeping their mouths shut and trying to explain why the baby's name doesn't match the name on the ticket?

The older "kid" is an 18 year old adult.

They paid for the god damn seat, the baby is allowed on the flight without paying for a ticket.  They're just putting their gd baby in the seat that is open, it would be no different then if you randomly had a seat open next to you and your friend who was also on the flight with a ticket moved up and sat next to you.  You guys are dumbasses.

the older kid had to go home early so they bought him/her a ticket for an earlier flight and then (incorrectly) thought that they could just put the baby in the older kids seat. guess what? you can't. if that was a big deal to them, then they should have originally bought five seats and not four. the fact that they didn't buy enough for all five tells you all that you need to know, but even if it doesn't then guess what, the airline has rules and regs and you can't just sub one person for another's seat and you agree to that when you buy a ticket. it's dumb but it's pretty standard across airlines.

Well the difference is that if there was an empty seat then the passenger they were trying to accommodate would be assigned that seat and it would no longer be an empty seat. It's more like what sys was saying about if you paid for an extra seat for elbow room.

the seat isn't open. the person who was assigned to it no-showed the flight so the airline resold it. that happens a thousand times a day. seriously 1,000 times every single day.
