Dean-ied in a close one once again: KU2 ADV
« on: February 06, 2017, 10:18:50 PM »

Cats led the league in 2PT% differential coming in, KU owned us tonight. Wade played great, Stokes hit some 3s, DJamer was solid, but its not enough.

Its not enough has been a theme far too often.

it's too bad about the 3pt% defense.

Its the 2s. We were dominated on 2s in the 1st half. Winning 2s has been K-State's calling card this year.

Wade was really good.

Kam needs to not shoot 2s.

DJamer was solid.

Barry was bad.

Wes did some nice things.

Not enough. (a theme continues)

agreed, but I think we've been able to cover that a few times by hitting a bit better 3%.  We don't shoot ~25% in the second half, and maybe we hide our blemishes enough to win.

1st half....Ku had 5 uncontested layups/dunks from transistion.  3 of their 4 3pt came off of 2 ORs and a Frank transistion pull-up 3.  There O is too good to allow all of that.

After our quick hot start of 8-11 FG. We went 7 of next 29.

Effort was great the last 15 minutes. We played hard. Our guards just missed too many shots.

We allowed 1.10 ppp. Our defense just isn't very good.

No value of the ball at wrong times, just awful.

I keep hoping (gotta stop doing that to myself) that DJamer's Leadership + Wes' Leadership = Jake Pullen's Leadership
We need them to hold a senior press conference and declare that they are NOT playing in the NIT.

We get stuck in stupid switches all the time.

The neatest part of this game were the Claws matchips at the 4. At no time did dean or the ku player have any ability to guard the other. All completely different styles of players.

We desperately needed one guard besides stokes to show tonight, and none did.

Once ku stop turning the ball over every freakin time down, they hit enough timely shots, we didn't. We miss too many easy shots, and don't manufacture enough baskets. Also, there were too many times we just sat around and did nothing, or got absolutely careless with the ball.

Should have tried to pound it down lower, DJamer was getting the foul advantage, and we never really did anything to overly exploit it.

I still can't get over how flawed ku is though, sure they won, and are a good team, but once they run up against a team that can take care of the ball and make lucas be ineffective, they're done.

To me, this is key to our success. DJamer should score 20 a game for the rest of the season. Every damn game the announcers point out that DJamer has the highest FG% in the league. It's like we don't scout our own team.  :bang:

Wes helped off too much and Jackson hit 2 3s to start 2nd half.   We called timeout down 47-38 with 18:00 left.   For the next 13:30, we held them to 4-15FG and 4 TOs.  Took the lead 60-59.  Our effort for that long stretch was great. 1 of those shots was a crazy tough layup by Frank. Another was the crossover top of the key 3pt that Graham had over Sneed.  Not bad D.

We allowed 1.10 ppp. Our defense just isn't very good.

Up 20-8, we were 13-38 2pt and 4-16 3pt the next 53 Possessions.    33 minutes of bad shooting.
I'm more disappointed with our offense than our defense.  Ku has a great O. And not a great D

we were down 59-58 and our possessions looked like...
1) KU loses ball, gets tipped into backcourt. Wes picks it up, drives to rim. Charge. TO.
2)Kam terrible post entry to Dean. Turnover
3)we have fast break after Sneed steal, Wes almost loses ball, gets layup block, Barry throws it away and totally missed Wes wide open under basket after we got OR from the block shot

4) Brown takes contested 17 foot shot that barely draws iron.
5) Dean has to take off balance 18 footer because we let shot clock run down to 1. Misses badly
6) DJamer falls down doing spin post move. TO.

That was 6 of the next 10 Possessions (other 4 were a made 3pt by Dean, 2pt by Dean, missed 3pt by Kam, DJamer 2-2 FTs)

That's Weber Ball to a T at crunch time.

Disappointing because they're good, but not that good, particularly defensibly.  But, they find ways to win.

i don't care that they play different positions on the floor, give sneed brown's minutes and start developing him for next year*

K-State's 3 point defense now stands at 45.6% allowed vs Big 12 teams.

7 out of 11 Big 12 opponents have shot 45% or better. 4 of 7 have shot 50% or better.

Every opponent except 1 (Texas) has exceeded their average 3PT% against us.

Big 12 opponents shoot nearly 9% better than their Big 12 3PT% against us.

I've always bought into the lack of control on defenses when it comes to 3PT%, but we are an exception as has been discussed multiple times here. Its not like this has been a consistent problem for oscar teams either, but there are systematic flaws in our defense this year leading to a major problem this year. Its a major reason for K-State's 5-6 Big 12 record.
