when is the last time we had someone declare early?  I'm thinking Josh Freeman but that can't be right.

Forgot about Bryce Brown

Joshua Moore 2010 ran from Prince (corner). Same year as Freeman? :dunno:

Nope. Freeman was 2009. Moore was 2010.

If Freeman had been 2010, we might have beat a crummy Neb team for an extra Dr. Pepper.

I don't understand why you two are even entertaining the possibility of this, it's very odd that you guys think anyone with no injury or behavior issues would drop four rounds.

Does he project out to be a safety?

Hopefully, some NFL agent isn't blowing smoke up the young man's ass.  Sometimes they'll tell kids what they want to hear to make a few bucks.  This is worst case and I hope this doesn't happen to him.  I wish him the best and I hope he plays for a team that appreciates him as much as KSU does.

Kansas State junior LB Elijah Lee will forego his final season of collegiate eligibility to enter the 2017 NFL Draft.

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline was on Lee's potential jump earlier in the week. Pauline pegs the 6-foot-3, 228-pounder as a possible fourth-round selection in this spring's draft. During the 2016 campaign, he racked up 110 tackles (6.5 for loss), 1.5 sacks, a pair of interceptions and a forced fumble. Pauline notes that while Lee's size may be lacking, he offers a bulldog mentality when in pursuit.

did you even read the kellis article? says the nfl draft advisory board predicted a mid-round grade and that lee wants to help support his mom. it's not some rando agent taking advantage of him. at the end of the day, these kids absolute bust their ass for my personal enjoyment and the minute they have the opportunity to turn that into cash money, i'm fine with it. by this time next year he could have blown out his acl, had a subpar year like barnett, or be in the exact some draft position except with another year of wear and tear on his body. i'll miss him playing for the cats, but he's only doing what any of us would do if offered a fantastic new job opportunity.

He isn't guaranteed to get drafted? Just because some board said he rates our well doesn't mean crap.. I hope he goes really high because better NFL draft prospects reflect great towards future recruits.  But Lee is that old ball sized linebacker and I can see teams be wary of drafting him if they view him like Arthur Brown...

BJ Finney had no injuries or behavioral issues, was generally projected by a lot of these "pundits" as a 2nd to 5th rounder and went undrafted.  Plus, a lot more "football people" felt BJ was "NFL ready".

Those that I've spoken with that are ITK say that Lee is more likely a 6th/7th rounder if he gets chosen. I like the kid and want him to succeed, however I'm firmly of the belief that he's doing himself a disservice coming out a year early.

I agree with this draft tracker guy: http://walterfootball.com/draft2017underclassmen.php

I have no idea. Eligible players can request a draft grade from them and then use that grade to make a decision about whether or not to declare early.

i think the board consists of member franchises GM's and Personnel Directors from my limited research.  Also I found this which isn't exactly re assuring.

Quote

The board has a fair track record that has successfully predicted pick placement for some underclassmen but not others.[2] From 2012 to 2014 it accurately predicted the selections of 73.7% of the players the board graded as first-round selections, and 85.4% of the players it graded for the second, but almost 53% of those receiving third-round grades or lower were not drafted.[2]

Wow, I wonder if Lee realizes he's essentially betting on a coin flip.  I thought this was a no brainer but seeing that figure would make me want to ride out another year

Not sure you can say that when everyone stayed away from him all year. He'll be fine.

But the problem people see is that the last rounds and UDFA are there to fill out roster spots on the depth chart.  At the rounds where he is projected at it's a crap shoot to see where teams feel they need depth.  That doesn't bode that well, especially when you look at how well the draft projections work out for him.

Clearly Lee should have invented an online girlfriend or something to raise his draft stock, I hear that is good for undersized linebackers.
