it was a shame that significant progress didnt get made, which it could have.  space exploration and a deeper and broader understanding of the cosmos is a good thing IMO.  not only can it someday get us away from a single point of failure as a species but it can help so much with so many other things.

still a single point of failure. nothing on the moon could be self sustaining. the problem with mars is its so hard to get started there, but once we did and it is self sustaining, if the earth is blown up by an asteroid or comet the human race is still around.

I think tech has a much more realistic shot at making our planets problems go away than it does making mars self sustainable.

not only do we need to handle earths problems, which by the way arent easy(and also we cant even protect cities from tsunamis, tornados, hurricanes, etc) we also have to figure in cosmic threats(comets, asteroids, etc).

by simple statistics having two habitable locations increases your likelihood of survival 10000000x fold

We should go to Mars because we can, and we need to get back in the business of doing amazing things nobody else can do and then mushing the rest of the world's face in it. Planting the flag is the first objective. Any technological and industrial advances are just icing on the cake. Let's make NASA great again. Start by mothballing the ISS and defunding all climate research.

I am fine with going to mars, but think the process of developing a moonbase would be a good practice for eventually getting to mars.  I mean, the moon is like 3 days away.  We could tweak the hell out of something like that until we get exactly what we want, then immediately set up condos on mars.  Also, when we do go to.mars we need to claim it 100% and call it United States of Amarsica.  If any countries claim that we can't own it, due to that space agreement thing, we can tell them that all mars disputes are to be handled on Mars and that we will see them in the 1st District Court of Amarsica whenever they would care to show up and present a case.
