My wife walks with our younger son and daughter to pick up our oldest son at school.  It's two blocks down the way.  If the weather is bad, she picks him up in our Odyssey.

The bus won't pick up my kid because we're so close, and he's five years old, so he struggles a little bit walking a couple of blocks with a bookbag and his lunch box.

I walked every day too but it wasn't a mile and a half with no sidewalks part of the way and crossing five lane traffic. If I were you and clams, I'd worry about your own kids and not someone else's. In my opinion, you would have to be about the worst parent in the world to allow a 6 yr old to do that.
