Rico-alling better than this Motley crew; Baylor ADV
« on: February 10, 2016, 09:55:11 PM »

Early turnovers. No energy. Can't shoot. Disappointing performances from key players.

It is what it is. It is what this team is. It is Bruceketball.

oscar said it best in postgame I suppose... "From Saturday on top of the world to lower than a snake's belly".

We've seen far too much snake's belly the last 2 years.

i really don't think our shooting would be a problem if our offense could get us good shots.  i know that sounds overly simplistic but i don't agree that this team "can't shoot".   our offense just doesn't generate high percentage shots from outside of the arc.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

1st half ... 12 TOs in 37 Poss
2nd half....started 10-33 with no 3pt (30% eFG)
Shocker... Piss poor ability taking care of ball. Piss poor shooting.

We had 8 TOs in first 17 Poss and Baylor got out to a 23-10 lead
Baylor had 9 TOs in their first 17 Poss of 2nd half.....yet Ksu only cut lead from 11 to 8 (56-48)

Before his 2 meaningless late 3s.... Edwards had 22 FGs, 20 TOs and 42% eFG in these last 7 gms
Westicles now has 29 TOs in his last 7 games. Hurt has 10 TOs in these last 3 games.
Gotta love how productive our upper classmen are

I think there is merit to that, but you also just flat out have bad shooters when you are on pace to be historically bad. With the pieces we have and better shots, yes, they could be better though.

ft% would suggest that they aren't great shooters.

3 pt % too. Playing zone is so easy when you don't have to closely contest anything beyond the arc.

Big 12 opponents shoot 40.7% from 3 against Baylor, including tonight. To be fair, only 34.8% of opponents' shots are 3s, good for 4th in the league, which is actually more important.

But Baylor's zone really pressures the ball, so if you can get good ball movement you should get better shots as clams was pointing out and we certainly didn't do that tonight.

I wasn't happy with our energy on Defense, but with just over 4:00 to play, Baylor only had 1.00 PPP

Then Ervin missed a point blank layup off of an OR (would have cut lead to 5)
Then Wes doesn't block off the 6'5 white dude. Bay gets OR and a 3pt make
Then Edwards plays "Ole" defense as Freeman blows by him for a layup
10 pt lead with 3:00 left. Game over

I remember distinctly, because this is when I left. I used to be that "never leave early" guy, but I couldn't take it anymore.

I feel like it isn't 100% necessary to shoot a zone out from behind the arc if you have good high post passing and quick ball movement.  I mean how many TOs did we have in the first half trying to do just that.....jfc those TOs were bad.

Seeing those stats, I can't believe TO% ended up where it was. Figured we were far worse, relative to Baylor. I suppose I felt that way bc Baylor was so much better at turning those into points.

Hot Horndogs was probably one of our three best performers last night. Not a knock on him, just a statement on overall performance.

I keep hearing people say that this team is fun to watch.

My response is always that a team that shoots this poorly is never fun to watch.

Those same people say that Frank's teams weren't fun to watch because they just clanged shots off the rim and tried to board

I think its in the context of good games; ie vs OU and OSU at home. When the offense is working, they can be very fluid and fun to watch. The problem is the norm is much more like we saw last night than those games.

people are just incredibly bad at recognizing their biases.  for kstate fans, a kstate team is inherently fun to watch.

True, but when it plays good basketball. If any K-State fan said last night's game was fun to watch they are just stupid.

Last night was the least fun I've ever had at a K-State basketball game - it was ugly.  Some Wooly/Asbury games I've attended were probably uglier but I didn't know how fun K-State basketball could be back then.

i enjoyed it.  but it's at least an open question whether i could be classified as a kstate fan or not.

I did not have fun watching the Baylor game. I actually didn't even have much fun watching the OU game until the last 2 minutes or so. The last game I truly enjoyed was probably OSU.

The interesting thing about oscar is that 3PT% is the single biggest indicator of success or failure while he's been at Illinois and K-State.

Every season he's had a team shoot 35% or better from 3 he's had an NCAA tournament team that finished in the Top 40 of kenpom.

In seasons where his team shoots worse than 35% from 3, he's only had 1 NCAA team (2014 K-State, 33.1%) and they finished #43 in kenpom.

If you sort any other advanced stat there are at least 2 outlier seasons. 3PT% is the most telling stat for oscar's teams, even more than offensive or defensive efficiency.
