Ok fellas here goes. Went to the festival in Lisbon fairly early. PJ didn’t take the stage until 11:10 so we had several hours. Got some merch that I figured would be sold out so that was sweet. Took a tour of the venue which was a giant park like most festivals I suppose. I wanted to go to the main stage just to see what type of crowd was forming. PJ fans line up days before sometimes in the states. I have little interest in that but wanted to see. Surprisingly, it wasn’t too crowded yet and there was room like 10-15 people deep from the stage with people sitting a chilling. I basically said, this will be the only time I’ll ever get this close and I don’t even give a crap about the other bands playing the other stages anyway so we decided to get some beers and camp. There would be 3 bands before PJ and about a 4-5 hour wait. First 3 hours were fine, saw some weirdo techno guys that were fun and then the Breeders which were great. There were some assholes that would crowd up but it was mostly PJ people telling them to eff off so it was fine. Now, I had seen the lineup along time ago and thought the next band was an odd fit to be playing right before Pearl Jam. It’s a festival so I didn’t think much of it. Well, it was a rough ridin' disaster. Not only does Sum 41 play crap music, but they are rough ridin' assholes. People started rushing up front and just ramming into people and they were encouraging it. Mosh pits, crowd surfing, all of it. It was rough. There was no way out so it was just protecting yourself when it came in waves. The worst was when it started from behind and you got shoved and hammered forward. I was just covering Mrs SF and elbowing and shoving the eff out of people to get them off her. If she hadn’t been there, it would have been a bit easier to navigate as it was really hard to keep both of us on our feet. She was a trooper and dropped several bows herself but it was a long ass 1 or so hour set. In hindsight, it was pretty freaking hilarious that a bunch of old ass PJ fans got caught up in a Portuguese mosh pit.
Anywhoo, it finally ended and everything settled back down and I saw an awesome show and was closer to my favorite all time band than I’ll ever get.
