If you buy someone a book, is it unethical to read it before you give it to them?

Sounds like you are buying a book for yourself and giving them hand me downs.  I still think its ok though so long as they aren't that close to you and you don't fold pages/highlight passages/etc.  Are you passing some of your used YA series to your nieces?

No, actually I really did order The Maze Runner series for my niece from Amazon and then right after I bought it Amazon tricked me and offered to let me start reading it online before the book arrived, but then it was only a sample of the first couple chapters and now I am hooked.

Last year I bought her a series (brand new) that I had already read (not the same physical books).

Also, a long time ago I bought Twilight for my niece and then I ended up reading it (and keeping it) and then buying the other books in the series for myself. This seems to be a recurring problem.

Could you write a loving note to your niece in the cover of the used book and pretend that the hand-me-down should have special meaning?

Good idea. I am going to try to find them to check out from the library first.

i would not recommend buying someone a book.  it sends a terrible message.

"hey, i'm too cheap and lazy to drive you to the library so here's a book for you that i bought.  while you're reading it, i will be hogging the television watching survivor."

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

Well I don't even live in the same town as her so waiting for me to take her to the library would be a terrible idea. Also, I won't be watching her TV. Also, she likes to read. Also, sometimes you like to own the books, especially when it is a series.

if she likes to read then maybe your gift to her is to show her how boring/dumb reading is.  buy her an xbox one and GTA V.

 :dubious:
I don't think those are appropriate for a 13 year old.

Hey MG, my daughter loves to read. Will be 11 in Jan. Is this book you are talking about age appropriate? We are always looking for something new for her.

I think a lot of kids die horrible deaths in it. I'd get her the Gronk book instead.

I haven't read the Maze Runner books (yet), but I did see the movie, and yes a bunch of kids die. So, I guess it depends on how much violence you want your daughter to read at age 11 (pussification of slobber's daughter???).

I would suggest The Wolves of Mercy Falls (Shiver Trilogy) for your daughter.

What other books has she read and liked?

When considering the total number of posts and gift ideas, only a few of them are books.

A kid I know recommended that I read that series. I have the first one in my briefcase now.
I generally give books as gifts to several people I know. I haven't ever read one of them first, but might if it was for certain friends.
