Will this team be Dean-ied? Mizzou ADV
« on: November 23, 2015, 08:22:57 PM »

Yeah, its too early to buy in and Mizzou is really bad, but winning is fun and this team seems to have some fun moments. Making the dance is still the minimum standard for this program and its likely that will be tough to reach, but some of these new players seem good and the returners seem to be improved. We'll see.

Mizzou is crap, but it seems to me that we defend pretty well, all across the floor. Their guards couldn't do crap against us.

Things I saw that I liked:

Fewer silly turnovers and passes than the last few years. Point guard play has improved drastically here and you definitely see a better "flow" with the game. Not as many  parts of the game.
We were pretty good at hitting FTs, I like that.
We were pretty good at rebouding
Hurt made a 3!
We won!

Things I saw I didn't like:
While we had fewer  moments, we still made several ill advised throws and passes.
Hurt needs to be a better defender. We didn't have to worry too much this game cause Mizzou is hot garbage but he get himself in poor position a lot.
Budke is the most tuckiest of a tuck wet dream player ever. I can do without that.

Other observations:
Pretty quiet and subdued crowd, to be expected with two teams that both fan bases don't expect much of and one of them crushed the other.
Mizzou is awful, so many turnovers and poor play and lack of poise. We look much more, much much more like a legit D1 team than they did.
Traffic was awful trying to even get near between construction, game traffic, rush hour traffic, and what appeared to be a movie premier about the World Series at Municipal Auditorium. Not that I didn't expect it to be bad, but it was pretty bad even with my rather low expectations.

Will be interesting to see how tomorrow goes. Even if they win I wouldn't get my hopes that high up, but you got to give oscar credit this team isn't quite the dumpster fire many of us expected/hoped for.

While it was great to win, and win by 20+, cats should have won by 40. That Mizzou team is bad, and played so bad tonight, winning by less than 30 doesn't look great.

Tomorrow should be interesting. I think they can win, but it will be tough.

I hope this never becomes just one guy's team.   We saw last year that did not work.  I am most excited about the contributions coming from many people.

interested to see how we look tonight. i'm fully aware of the level of competition we've faced thus far, but i've seen good k-state teams look worse than we've looked thus far.

i don't know what to think  :runaway:

i don't think we have a good guard, so, that will suck when we play any team with a good guard

one good thing compared to last year is that at least the PGs don't wildly overestimate their ability

I brought this up to a friend during the game... Which is worse right now, KU football or MU basketball? Despite their probable 0-12 record I think the KU football program is in slightly better shape. Mizzou is still in decline.

I would prefer to see Hurt look for less 3s.

He took 4 last night, and thought hard about taking at least one other.

But they aren't KU football talent bad. I mean, they are playing 4 Top 100/4 star players.

They win way too many games to be comparable to KU football.

That may be, but other than Puryear I wouldn't want any of Mizzou's players on our team based on what I saw last night.

MU was really bad last year and will probably be bad this year, but not KU football bad. 13 TCU was probably the closest basketball equivalent we've seen to this year's KU football, and even they weren't as bad.

I just don't think Anderson is cut out to coach at this level. Maybe he'll prove that assumption wrong, but early returns are really bad and way worse than anything oscar has done.

Things I liked:
 - the team seemed very much in sync.  We seemed to move very well and play a seemingly aggressive D.
 - Wade played the entire first half(i think) without any major foul issues, and looked pretty rough ridin' solid the entire time without disappearing at times.
 - Wes has improved more in the last 8 months than almost any other cat player I can remember has from Jr to sr yrs.

Things that will get us killed soon:
 - We have no good guard play.  I think we have some bright spots that will eventually yield solid, not great, play in the coming years
 - Once wes is figured out, we are going to be stale and stuck
 - We sucked at scoring for the most part

oscar needs to find either a really good 3 or 2 that can contribute immediately next year.  Once wes is gone, I don't know what this team will do without a good 3 or 2, that doesn't appear to be on the team right now.

One other note:  last night's refs were basically in the mindset of "eff the new rules and points of emphasis".  I didn't mind it, but let the inconsistency begin, I guess.
