I don't know if there is or is a god. To claim that, would be to make the claim that I am omniscient, a god, myself. I'm not going to delve into my viewpoint further at this time.

all this but also add that i don't care either way

i think i've posted this before, but if i were to join a religion, i'd choose lds.  it's a great organization.

Oh man.  Why?  I guess if you want to be part of the community/social side that's okay, but to be a card carrying temple worthy member you have to do some ridiculous stuff.

They build amazingly supportive communities unlike any other religion that I know of. If a Mormon moves to a new community, they're met with an incredible social structure - am army of families will help them move in, cook them meals, invite them over for diet cokes, etc. Plus the missionary thing is pretty interesting and gives their young people unique, valuable experiences. Not sure if that's what sys was referring to, but it's the good parts of the LDS organization that I think of. The bad things are the tithing and the misogyny and the history of racism that seem harsher than most other religions. Other than that, their requirements aren't significantly more harsh/strange than other religions.

Basically, you need to be a "full tither" to get a temple recommend.

exactly, most practical benefits and also they mostly take their beliefs seriously, which i think you'd want if you wanted to be religious.  and they're super nice.

the only downside (for me) would be that they're pretty modern.  i really like history and tradition and ritual and all of that stuff.  so a more ancient lineage would have that appeal.

Yeah, I think their tight community helps them have such strong believers. With a strong support system already in place, they rarely interact socially with non-Mormons, which kind of creates a "we're right" mentality that's stronger than other religions. It also gives great peer pressure (or support, depending on your perspective) to avoid certain vices and live piously.

A lot of other religions have no requirements at all, so requiring things like actually going on missions and auditing tithes would be a pretty big step for most people.

I would throw Mennonites in this same league, except without all the racism.

the mennonites in mexico are a little racist maybe.  or maybe it's just the normal response of an isolated minority, it's kinda hard to tell.

Meade KS has Mennonites that were involved with heavy drug trafficking/ money laundering with Mexico Mennonites and some of them just got federally charged for it. Very big news for Meade as you can imagine.

that's pretty fantastic, steve dave.  i'd love to hear that either money or drugs were hidden inside cheeses, but that's probably too much to ask.

No they don't.  They believe their church president and 12 apostles are prophets that receive direct revelation from god.  Those guys make up the beliefs.  The members only get to vote on whether they sustain those guys.  It is adaptive though because the head dudes can change doctrine whenever they want (or whenever pressured to do so... Polygamy & racist stuff) and claim that the change came from god.

I think they are the only religion that changes doctrine over time.

Now I feel like, if you're a liberal, you hate religion and vise versa.
