3rd quarters
« on: October 11, 2015, 12:04:13 AM »
The last two games on offense...

30 plays run for 43 yards.

1.4 yards per play.

18 pass plays.

2 completions.

2 sacks.

1 interception.

Defensively we've allowed over 6 yards per play, but only 2 scoring drives for 13 total points and we've forced 2 turnovers.

Dimel and Miller did a great job in both games in the 1st half, that can't be denied with the combined 63 first half points. However, their failure to make proper halftime adjustments that translate to any 3rd quarter offensive success has killed this team in each game. By the time the offense comes around, the pressure put on the defense has been too great to overcome. We've had back to back chances to come out and put games away or at least give our defense a significant cushion and each time we've failed while also being unable to control the clock or put up any 3rd quarter points.

The results speak for themselves.

Break down the fourth quarters.  Defense has been retched.

I will tomorrow. My argument would be that our terrible 3rd quarter offense has been a bigger issue and contributed to the 4th quarter defensive collapses. But yeah, the 4th quarter defensive collapses are not good.

Us having "Uncle Mo" with full fledged home on our sideline during the 1H and then using the 3Q to not only kick him out, but helping him move in across the field has been as much of a hindrance as anything.

This is on the coaches and play calling as originally pointed out.

I feel like their 3rd quarter problem is that they anticipate what the other team is going to do (ie take away from them) and then just assume the other team will do that.  So we're basically fist rough ridin' TCU with the QB run game (various read options), which sets ups all kinds of play action for us, and TCU is giving us the underneath stuff....and we come out and start running fade routes.  They just seem to get away from what's successful without it being taken away from them.

our offense is at its best when the QB runs.  When he doesn't, we suck, imo.

We are 3-4 in the last seven games. 1-3 in games determined by a touchdown or less...

Dimel calls plays with a don't lose mentality, he gets rattled in tight situations. Not a Big 12 caliber OC.

Yeah, whoever decided to have huebner just come out chucking deep fades, even though our horribly inaccurate qb kept throwing them out of bounds, should be strung up.

Running game working.....check
Qb not very accurate....check
Wr can't get separation....check

Solution:  keep chucking it!!
Awaiting the inevitable KITN

I agree with this and that was my main point last week as well.

Our offensive coaches have a ton of different run game and run packages available. In the first half TCU absolutely could not stop QB run game and read plays. They didn't in the 2nd half much either on our only TD scoring drive, yet we insisted on throwing the ball in both games.

Its classic over thinking by the coaching staff and this has always been a problem for Snyder/Dimel/Miller.

Maybe Big 12 coaches have figured Snyder out? He's been so good in the past at predicting what the defensive adjustments will be that we have always been able to control the third quarter and preserve our halftime lead.  Its possible that Gundy and Patterson knew we would switch up our offensive approach because Snyder thought they would adjust their defense and so they showed what Snyder expected them to and then changed up their look before we snapped the ball.  I saw several plays in the third where TCU looked like they were going to load the box but then switched out but from their standpoint we lined up exactly like we did in the first half when we ran the read.

What are you going to do to stop their offense in the second? Patterson, "Well, Bill thinks we are going to go full in on stopping their run so he's going to shows us the same looks but he's going to pass instead.  We're going to show him what he expects and then drop into coverage right before they snap the ball."  Scheme the schemer.

i had some big post written up in my head about it, but this probably sums it up as well as i could. i just don't get it. i'm sure some (including waters on twitter) would come back and say tcu made adjustments in the second half to stop the run, but it feels like we don't even make them prove it.

We only ran consistently on one second half drive and it led to our only touchdown

Yep and then the next drive with a chance to win the game we went right back to throwing the ball.

To be fair, if Burton just catches the damn ball on that overturned catch I actually think we win. But I suppose the point would be that our shitty WR's not catching the ball consistently is another reason to run.

Maybe I'm too hard on the D, they just appear to be incapable of stopping big 12 offenses.

Look who was on back-end of the defense during the 2nd half. Will Davis plus a bunch of sophomores and freshmen. Our past recruiting failures are bitch slapping us in the face.

BTW, I think it far better than we have Freshmen and Sophomores getting torched vs junior and seniors. Attest it seems like there is a solid chance the problem gets solved in a year or two. Versus continued garbage.

This.

The 3rd quarter was a complete disaster, but going 3 and out there was really bad.

Our inability to take advantage of a team daring us to pass, isn't getting the recognition it deservers. By us or by the coaches.

Our inability to take advantage of a team daring us to pass, isn't getting the recognition it deserves. By us or by the coaches.

Of course, but we've dealt with that before. QB reads/runs are still viable against teams that do that and the first half proved that.

I have no doubt that Dimel/Miller completely understood that TCU was daring us to pass and called it accordingly. Unfortunately we neither have the QB or WRs right now to win games that way, as has also been proven in the past two 2nd halves.

Who gives a crap. Even if they were consistently loading the box, which I'm not sure if that's true, we were still getting 5 yards a pop running the ball.

I think you could argue that them MAKING HALF TIME ADJUSTMENTS has been the problem, no?

Yes, overadjusting and overcoaching in both games.

This is the anti-2011 when we won bunch of close games. I remember several games that year in which we were behind in the third quarter but stubbornly kept running the ball and eventually won.
So odd that whole mind set has disappeared and we are now losing close games.

I think part of the problem this year is that the coaches trust the QB depth even less, but even that doesn't make much sense. Play games to win them now.
