Dislikes:
- Ultra conservative play calling after 1) the late 4th quarter fumble recovery (looked like coaching staff was just playing for a field goal) and 2) the La Tech punt with under two minutes to go (at first I wondered why Holtz punted, but realized he knew we would run it up the gut three times and could stop that).
- Red zone play calling all game long
- Dropped passes
- No Warmack

This sums up my feelings.

Wildcat should only be used when we have a QB who can kind of do receiver-ish things and a RB who can kind of do QB-ish things and you can break a normal-personnel huddle mid-drive w/your QB splitting out and you RB behind center and freak the defense out for a play.

I kind of get using it in the red zone since it saves you from an extra exchange (see Hubes-Dimel). Still, if we can't show we are capable of a throw or even a jet sweep or something out of the formation, it won't be a benefit. There is no reason for a defense not to just stack the box at this point.

The dreaded extra exchange could be prevented by lining up normally with a quarterback in shotgun and running back offset and having the RB take the snap directly, with the bonus of weird'n out the D a little.

Wildcat should be a trick play potential thing where you break it out 1-3 times per game and if the defense isn't prep'd your RB throws it or if they are your RB runs it himself and hopes to get a hole or an extra block because a defender is trying to figure out what to do with the QB who conceivably could run downfield and catch a ball.

It was 7 years ago that the Dolphins f'd everyone's world with it routinely.  It's over.

i find it amusing that announcers act like its the first time they have ever seen the wildcat, every single time we run it.  pretty good belly laugh.

the wildcat works for the same reason the qb draw works, you get an extra blocker. our problem is not the play itself but the fact that we suck ass at run blocking and lose the extra blocker advantage.

But our "the wildcat" - with a RB taking the snap and Bazooka standing over w/the ref - is slightly worse b/c it's a 100% attempted penetration into the box (chill, tracz).

QB draws are fine but for our QB selection of late.

Likes: Lee, Cantele, Cook, Skip Holtz accepting the chop block penalty instead of taking 4th & 2, Silmon getting 24 carries

Dislikes: The muffed punt, Wildcat formation

Snyder was directly asked about the Wildcat during the postgame presser. He acknowledged that running out of it is not working and hinted at the fact that Jones was supposed to throw it. I wonder how much of it is poor play design and how much is just the team not executing the play as it is called. Either way, until they can get things fixed in practice they need to get rid of it.

This should probably have his own thread but I thought Skip Holtz made the right decision in taking that penalty. Our offense was completely stuck. The TD in the first OT was as much as a hail mary as you can have in the red zone, total luck. We did nothing in the 2nd OT and at that point did nothing in the 3rd OT. If that trend continued we would have been forced into a 50 yard FG attempt into the wind.

yeah, i probably would have taken that penalty too.  I think most coaches would have done that. I mean, I like that he did in that it ended up being beneficial to us, but I don't think it was a bad call to take it.

once our DEs sealed the edge and stayed in front of driskel i feel like our D played much better.

hopefully we make that adjustment against whatever B12 scrambling QBs there are out there.

Is he better than or equal to Jones, Dimel, Gronk?  because they all get plenty of carries.

I'll add one to the likes: improvement on penalties. Sure we got that chop block in the 3 OT (that we made not matter) but still, 4 penalties for 35 yards. Compare that to 9 for 85 vs. UTSA and 8 for 70 against South Dakota, significant improvement there. Definitely cleaned up a lot of those stupid false starts.

I like Starks. I'm not smart enough to know how good he is overall, but he likes to lay the wood, so I like him for that.

The adjustment was replacing Willis with Tanner Wood.  Willis kept getting sucked in and was too slow to keep contain.  Wood came in and shut it down.

Moving the pile is what he was doing. Just look at how the forward momentum stops as soon as he makes contact releasing all that kinetic energy.
