Your footing the bill for public,  too, tho.

no crap. the difference is it's available to everyone no matter if they pay taxes or how much tax they pay. with private it's a choice you make at a cost. hiring a private tutor to teach your kids k-12 is obviously choosing someone and I think if you make a choice to send your kid to a private school you could have the choice. actually, I'm sure there is a choice at a lot of institutions.

My son's kindergarten teacher seems like she was born to be a kindergarten teacher.

She's about 60 years old, short hair, high singy songy voice, and has this aura that says, "I make cookies every single day."

She puts smiley faces, stars, and Wow's on all of the kids' papers.  It's adorable.

Well, yeah.  I am addressing it as a means of teacher review.  Mich'Cat noted that the practice needs to be elevated.   I think public school is what needs to be elevated.   As you state,  private school is already a shopping experience.

One great way to tell who's an Ed. debate n00b is by identifying people who think there are only two buckets into which you can put schools (or three, if you include charters).  Like, oh yeah! All private schools are totally pretty much the same nationwide and can totally be assessed in super broad terms! Same for public schools. "Public schools suck, amirite?!"  Uhh, are we talking about in Fairfax County or in Chicago? Because there are so many variations that speaking about them in generalities makes that person look like a massive dumbass. Not that that's anyone here necessarily, just something I was thinking about.

Many parents know quite a bit about the teachers available in the grade their kid is about to go into.  We trust kids and parents to select preschools & colleges, middle schoolers and high schoolers get to select which math class they take, which science class, English class, gym class, etc.  it seems like this is happening everywhere but elementary.   :dunno:

Some do. Also are you talking about most parents in Kansas? Or most parents in Oregon? Or NY? Or Louisiana? Because LOL at that massive oversimplification of an incredibly complex and varied issue.

My elementary school let parents pick the teacher. It wouldn't be a good means of evaluation because new teachers inevitably get a classroom full of kids whose parents didn't bother to pick the teacher.

Great call. This is one of the millions of layers to the Evaluation-based Salary onion that massive dumbasses never think to consider.

And yes OKCat. Teachers are great. Or at least the great ones are. Fun fact: one of SB's Canadian friend's fave teachers (hard to choose) flew to Louisiana and did a reading at his wedding. Was a special moment for all involved. :D

It was actually quite amazing how GCHS had as many good teachers as it did.  I was quite lucky I will never forget that.

in california and the northeast, teachers can make 80k+.

I'm aware. TMHTJD's post was misleading because of teacher salary scale. Whenever someone talks about how much teachers make they never discuss the salary steps. In schools where there may be perhaps one or two making $83,000 there are several in the same school making a fraction of that. If someone makes that much money they have a master's or doctorate degree, have been teaching for 20+ years, and are likely doing extra-curricular activities. There are no glorified baby sitters making $80,000 a year.

So you're saying teachers with experience and additional skills can make more money.

they are great in an equal ratio as any other college educated profession
Do any other college educated persons openly complain about their job as often as teachers?  Not sure, but i think not.  Like my city planner isn't blowing up my facebook with crap about how tough it is to be a city planner, all the time.

One thing I find humorous is the Facebook posts entitled something like "the myth of teachers getting summers off" or "10 reasons teachers don't actually get summers off" or something like that.  It's funny because I don't do any of the things on the list and I take the entire summer off and do nothing school related until about 1 week before it starts.

Wait, you're saying people out themselves as massive dumbasses by making blanket statements that are almost entirely inaccurate and devoid of any understanding of the inner workings of a profession they aren't in?
