Pay them better, and honor their pension.  You pat dogs on the head and compliment them for  not laying a big greasy loaf on the carpet.  Teachers ain't dogs.  They have an awesome responsibility and impact the future of this nation.  To my conservative brothers and sisters who attack education I say jam a text book up your butt and get real.   To my liberal friends, quit spending money on the global hothole quackery, and spend it on education.  SAve money for education and send possums to Mars maybe they will evolve into something useful.

I think a group of them are.  I also think there should be a way to differentiate amongst the group.  Teachers I know hate the idea of a system being put in place to monitor teacher performance.  Some don't trust the state to come up with an adequate measuring stick and I get that.  However, there certainly needs to be a way to stop talking about all the teachers as if they are the shitty one you had as a kid in 5th and 6th grade.  We need to do this, cull the ones under performing, and increase the pay of the successful ones.

I saw and interesting suggestion in a teaser for an article I haven't had the chance to read yet(came across my FB feed yesterday).  It proposed that perhaps we need to let parents pick their kids teacher and that such selection might lead to a way to evaluate the teachers.

Most parents want the best for their kids.  Many parents know quite a bit about the teachers available in the grade their kid is about to go into.  We trust kids and parents to select preschools & colleges, middle schoolers and high schoolers get to select which math class they take, which science class, English class, gym class, etc.  it seems like this is happening everywhere but elementary.

Also, teachers should be paid more AND a it should be more difficult to become one and they should be better trained so they're not thought of as "glorified babysitters". The profession needs to be elevated.

I have friends who are teachers now and it's funny to see them go out and cut loose in Aggieville or wherever because I think, "yep, by elementary teachers probably did that too".

It would be a ridiculous waste of resources to make it fair.

Meh, it could be a random lottery for selection for the first several yrs.  Then, cull based on reviews,  hire new, rinse, repeat, and eventually you should end up with a crop of teachers in demand by parents.

Also, pay them more and train harder on the front end.  It shouldn't be a case where ppl choose the profession just to get summers off or because they want to coach basketball or something.

30k in Kansas dollars is 80k in California dollars

I thought this was common knowledge, do we have people on this blog so effing dumb that they don't get this? Good heavens

california is a big place (kansas also has a lot of variation, i'm sure).  30k in kansas might be more or less like 80k bay area dollars, 30k mhk dollars might be about 31 k fresno dollars.

at least in california, public salaries, including teacher salaries, vary a little regionally, but nowhere near as much as the difference in cost of living varies.  public employees in places like fresno make out like bandits.

Most parents are terrible at parenting and don't care as long as their kid is someone else's problem

I could get behind some sort of teacher selection in private schools but not public. if you're footing the bill for whatever private education you choose then go nuts.

I haven't done the research, but I imagine private school fees are much higher than public school fees.
