My brother-in-law is a union lineman and he makes shitloads more than I do. He could easily die on the job, though.

You will eventually pass him though.  Also, he works outside

I don't know, he gets like 2.5x pay all the time. I'm not sure if it'll happen.

Also, if he doesn't die on the job he could get hurt pretty bad.

Plus, at 55 his body will be physically shot and he won't be able to do anything fun in retirement and his skill will be useless due to his body being useless.

When I read that and saw who posted it all I could think of was a guy with robot hands trying to eat peas...

I might need a few days off

all the dumbasses pushing back against michigancat's bro in law don't know what they're talking about.  and union electricians make even more (but don't get as many overtime opportunities).

on the project i was working on in 2012, when hurricane sandy hit the east coast, about 90% of the linesmen cleared out the day after it hit.  they started trickling back a month later, having made more in that month than i make all year.

Actually only one hand. The electricity went in his hand and out his foot. He didn't lose the foot but they had to do a bunch of skin grafts on it and it still has issues.

I know a lineman too.  Easily die, travels a lot and never sees family (which he seems to prefer), but makes bank.

What would a typical government job that doesn't require a college degree pay, say a post office job in Kansas.  Would $40,000 be close?  Now do a return on investment calculation for how much more you make with your degree.
Now calculate how much you like your job compared to the hypothetical government one.

Who has had one? What was your highest unpaid balance? How old will you be when they are paid off?
What was the degree you were after? Did you get it?  Did you get a job in that field? Has your investment in education (student loans) paid off?

yeah. 7k. was 22,
associates, yeah, yeah, pretty well...Although i think about continuing once a month, but hasn't happened.
Sometimes I think of the Book of Job and how God likes to really eff with people.

I have a really low interest rate, so I extend mine out as far as they would let me.  I think I will probably pay it off by the time I am 50 or so, not sure.  4 years of under grad, and 3 years of grad school left me with about $60K total.  My wife probably has $20K or something like that.   It just sort of comes out of my account every month and I don't really think about it.  It definitely sucked when I was just starting out, but it's not big deal now. go cats.
