But for real, self gender identifying as a woman, being attracted to women, but self identifying as a straight person is really confusing.

absolutely, this sort of thing happens all the time and is a stress-free process. Especially from the athletic world.

as an earlier poster mentioned, jenner is far removed from any sphere of athletics.

all humans (all vertebrates) overcome stress on a daily basis in order to pursue their chosen activities. bestowing an award signifies that someone has done something so far greater than the ordinary struggles common to us all as to be exemplary and uplifting. some random strangers criticize him/her on social media. bfd, wackycat overcomes the same thing on this board on a daily basis. what other difficulties has jenner encountered, endured and overcome?

this sys take is lukewarm. The ESPYs are an incredibly self-important celebrity self-suckfest which make it the perfect venue for recognizing the outstanding achievements in the area of courage for a reality tv star.

fair point on him being removed from athletics, but I don't think the hardest part about being trans is mean people on social media. I've seen trans folks before and after and it isn't the kind of stress "all humans" have to deal with.

And using your criteria, you could make an argument that pretty much no one but Nelson Mandela actually deserved the award:

I'm sure Caitlyn would say she is not accepting the award for personal recognition but rather to use the ceremony as a platform to inspire others to have the courage to accept who they are. 2015 is shaping up to be the Year of the Queer.
