Which ball players will you tell your grandkids about?
« on: March 23, 2015, 09:38:30 PM »
Ground rules-

1) must be a truly transcendent player- no on cares that your cousin played single A with Joe Randa for a year. Spare us and your grandkids. Homerism has its place, but it isn't here- Skinny Benny is going to tell his grandkids that Ayome May was a really good basketball player. Also no one cares that you own the fastest leg of the Centralia 4x100 relay team

2) Moments matter/stats matter too
I am not as likely to tell my kid about Jeter even though his flip and dive in the stands and World Series are as good as any moment that Barry Bonds had outside of the HR race or Mike Trout has had

3) Descriptions matter- (if you know) What are you going to say as you are bouncing the grandkids on your knee?

Baseball- Barry Bonds seeing him crush HR and reach base almost have of all PA and get intentionally walked to score a run while everyone hated him and his head looked weird and he was totally an enigma.

Basketball- Michael Jordan game 6 Jazz

Football- Barry Sanders probably has the most redic YouTube videos of all-time.  I would probably just turn my grandkids loose on that and make sure to tell them that Emmett Smith is not as good

Soccer- Messi/Ronaldo

Hey Bookie why don't you just tell your grandkids about those players right now?

The most "in awe" moments I've had as a sports fan watching games in person:

1. Watching Mark McGwire take batting practice in 98. I know he was more juiced up than anyone ever, but it was the most impressive thing I've ever seen. Every swing was a HR and most were 450+ feet.

2. Watching Bo break his bat over his head. When I was about 7, my Dad and I moved from our upper deck seats to lower deck right behind the Royals dugout towards the end of a game. Bo struck out in the late innings, and destroyed his bat over his head like it was a toothpick. Being 7 and seeing that up close is like, basically the most awesome thing ever.

3. Sproles. He wasn't the greatest running back I've seen live (that would be Jamaal, or Adrian Peterson at OU), but watching him run for 4 years at KSU was wonderful. The play that will always stand out the most to me is the TD in Lincoln with someone hanging on his jersey.

4. Yordano Ventura. I will tell my Grandkids about Game 6.

Now, that's just hurtful.

Neat thread.

I may be regionally biased, and of course I never saw him play myself, but without a doubt the first person that came to mind for me?

Roberto Clemente - a truly good person, not to mention an amazing baseball player, who used his star status for nothing more than to help others, and who was taken way before his time doing just that.

Great thread! Some great ones mentioned.
I'd add Askia Jones both the Fresno State massacre and having him on my team at the rec when he'd start dropping 35 footers if his team was behind. (The 2nd part may not count for the thread's rules, but idc)

The best athletes I've seen play live are G. Brett, Durant, DWade, and Griffey Jr.

The 3 most memorable performances I've seen live are Ski dropping 62, Miles Austin's 250 rec yards vs KC in 09, and Beasley's 32/24 in his Cats debut.

I will tell all of my kids/grandkids about Cats legends Bishop, Pullen, and Arthur.

Bo is the greatest athlete of our lifetimes and I don't really care to listen to another argument
