KU is also dangerously close to being booted from the AAU, as I believe we are in the bottom 1/3rd and the appointment is an annually renewable, competitive one. I think Gray-Little's primary mission and focus is on making sure KU does not get removed.

This HAS to burn the Nubs hard though, as it was the clincher that allowed them to make the move. I'm not sure as many Big 10 schools would have been as welcoming without AAU membership.

KU has the benefit of having most of the ag research money come through Kansas State. Harvey made good points about not counting USDA research money but including the staff in the breakdown. KSU would take a lot of that strain off of KU's numbers.

Looks like the AAU is cleaning house. Syracuse is also leaving http://chronicle.com/article/Syracuse-U-Facing-a-Forced/127363/, but at least the have the good sense to leave of their own before being kicked out. I'm guessing stories like these will keep coming out until AAU membership is down to 50 schools.
