The PIF could get involved the same way anyone else with money can, it doesn't take a ton of money to get involved with college football. The thing is their involvement would look like it does with anyone with a couple of extra spare dollars willing to blow it. Fund a program, sponsor a bowl, if they really wanted to get wacky, buy conference media rights. The sport is too decentralized for them to or anyone else with billions to take the sport over. Right now anyway.
What if the PIF says here is X Billion (whatever number it takes) for the biggest 30ish brands to start their own league outside of the NCAA?
They could do that. And/or offer to buy them out of their media deals and be the media source for all college football.

They could buy the media rights of these schools without having to both buy media rights and fund their entire athletic departments. Schools selling their football programs, specifically to PIF comes with complications that won't be easy to overcome and these issues would be much more over ranging and complicated than anything golf dealt with. It's much too unnecessarily complicated when just purchasing media rights is much easier and practical and just as lucrative.

Aside from any of that, why exactly would the PIF even want to get involved with college football? They are a global entity, college football is extremely niche, even within America and American sports. There are literally scores of worldwide sports leagues and entities that are more enticing to the Saudis. MLS and the NHL would be much easier to buy into and are much more globally relevant than college football.

Agree that it’s niche for sure. If I wanted to really throw monkey wrenches in US culture and tribalism, college football would be a handy way to do some of that…but I am convinced that the Saudi’s love money more than anything else.

Mostly, the PIF is a fun hypothetical that shows that college sports are certainly “for sale.”

My take on what this means.

  • Deal on the table is with Apple for all the games at a $ that is acceptable for teams to stay but teams don't want all streaming
  • Apple is open to the concept of sub-licensing games to a linear partner
  • No such partner has been willing to agree to sub-license any games at a price that makes the deal attracive

The fact the his source termed it accelerated a year into the process is just funny.  If I was a fan of a PAC school I would be sooo fed up with this.

I think this is a sign they don't have the number that's satisfactory yet. They've been very vocal about wanting to expand and this almost certainly assures that they are going to be at 10 teams for, at least, '24-'25 and Kliavkoff didn't want that. I also wonder if they are negotiating with mostly apple at this point, how apple feels about adding a pro-rata clause given the schools they are likely to add.

The article is mainly about ESPN on-air talent layoffs that happened Friday but I found this nugget interesting.  Sounds like ESPNs books are in better shape than what some think.

Of importance, Disney has made ESPN its own division, meaning in November it will break out its own earnings for the first time, which, despite cord-cutting, are said to still be quite impressive, according to sources.

Over 98% of BYU students are Mormon.  18% of Baylor students are Baptist.

Just in case anyone was wondering why PAC 12 didn't invite SDSU to join by June 30th.  Of course, there is a certain amount of BS to it.

Finally, a logical answer to why the Pac-12 didn’t finalize a media deal by June 30
Matt Zemek
Sat, Jul 1, 2023, 11:29 AM CDT·2 min read

John Canzano cracked the code
. He gave a good, logical, entirely reasonable explanation for why the Pac-12 did not finalize its media rights deal by June 30 to facilitate a San Diego State move to the conference.

The question was a puzzler to college sports industry insiders: Why wouldn’t the Pac-12 move to get its media rights deal done by June 30? After all, the Pac-12 needs to get the deal done by July 21 (Pac-12 media day), so why not push the calendar forward three weeks and include San Diego State in the fold? What could be so special about waiting three weeks to get this deal done? San Diego State wrote that letter to the Mountain West in mid-June. Didn’t that indicate the Aztecs wanted to move to the Pac-12?

One piece of this was missing. Canzano provided it in his latest Substack column:

Of the Pac-12, Canzano wrote that “it could be that they’ve discovered a financial advantage to waiting another year to invite two new members.”

Canzano continued:

“The College Football Playoff is expanding for the 2024 season. The new TV deal is going to bring a windfall to the conferences that participate. Is it possible the Pac-12 doesn’t want to split those first-year shares 12 ways vs. 10? That it’s waiting because doing so helps make up for the haircut they took in the Comcast overpayment fiasco?

“A veteran college administrator (not from the Pac-12) floated that theory to me on Friday as the news about San Diego State landed. He offered that being without Southern California as part of the Pac-12 for one football season wouldn’t kill you on the recruiting or TV-deal fronts.”

There we go. That makes sense. The Comcast overpayment mess cost Pac-10 schools (the 10 schools which will be members when USC and UCLA leave next year) several million dollars. Waiting a year to invite San Diego State means that 2024 media rights revenues will be split 10 ways instead of 12, which will add a little more money to each of those Pac-10 schools and cushion the blow of the Comcast problem. Then the conference can bring in SDSU in the 2025-2026 college sports cycle and add the inventory it needs to reach the desired price point.

That’s the answer we were looking for. Thank you, John Canzano. This is the likely (not guaranteed) outcome of the San Diego State saga. The Aztecs will save those exit fees but will wait another year and eventually bolt. Same for SMU.

New York is passing legislation to keep the ahole NCAA from interfering with NIL.  It's time this shame called the NCAA needs to get the eff out of student athletics.  BTW, for those who are not aware the NCAA was formed and is subject to presidents of the universities.  It's time they quit rough ridin' with student athletics.  Also, California is doing the same thing along with about a dozen other states.

Texas has already done this and the NCAA said that if the schools don't follow NCAA rules they are free to leave the NCAA and they're 100% correct. People act like the NCAA is some third party meddling in college athletics, that's far from the truth. The NCAA is run and governed by the member schools. These schools are creating NCAA policy then the ones who don't like it are running to the government to try to circumvent policies that they had a hand in creating.

These state laws are completely toothless, they have no jurisdiction over the NCAA. If Texas A&M, that's the biggest sign that this is all bullshit, follows through with their vow not to follow NCAA rules on NIL, you can bet your ass the rest of the SEC will expect them to get sanctioned and if they are sanctioned there is nothing Greg Abbott can do about it. If Texas A&M doesn't like it, they can feel free to start a new college sports governing body that will give in to 50 different states telling their schools to follow 50 different sets of rules.

The Big XII is spending more on NIL than anyother conference.  Your thoughts on NIL?
