It's not about adding them.  It's about kicking them out that's problematic.

The Big Ten will not kick out Northwestern.  Do they deserve to be in a BCS conference?  No.  But this isn't about who deserves to be versus who doesn't deserve to be.  Wake Forest doesn't deserve to be.  Duke doesn't deserve to be.  But will they stay in them?  Yes. 

Northwestern is the safest of them all because the Big Ten is as much of an academic conference as it is an athletic conference. 

If we blew up the entire system and started over from scratch, does KSU make some mythical 64 team field?  Sure.  But, like the NCAA tournament, we have a crapload of teams that don't deserve to be there because they got an automatic invite.  Northwestern, Wake, Duke, etc. are the benefactors of historical alignment in those conferences.

FYI - these rankings are for undergraduate programs. Most of the reasoning behind whether a school is attractive or not in the whole conference realignment is primarily linked to grad school prestige and  research dollars. While undergrad rankings and grad school rankings are often correlated, they're not necessarily tied to each other. ...and since Kansas is only big enough for one med school and public law school, KU gets some of the tangential benefits from having those grad schools under their umbrella. In other words, KU is ranked high because they have more dollars and researched tied to their undergrad rankings, however, this does not mean their grad school programs are good - they just exist.

Kansas and Kansas State are expected to have options with the Pac-12, possibly, if it were to expand to 16 with the Oklahoma schools and without Texas. The ACC could also be a possibility for the Kansas schools to join. The Big East would be palatable as the third option as well
