150 acres x 1250 per acre per  year is roughly 190k a year.  I say you do it Tom.

Hmm, I wonder how close to large transmission lines they are talking.  My parents have a few hundred acres on the eastern edge of the flint hills which is just pastureland right now within 5-10 miles of large transmission lines.

it costs like 200-1000k to build a mile of new transmission line.  plus they have to get (buy) permission from every landowner the new line would cross.  so proximity is worth a lot.

Seems legit.  I must admit I had to read up on this.  Replace herbicide and insecticide with fire.   Get the crop up and a canopy established. Supplement with another burn or traditional cultivation.  I may have to buy a 6 row cultivator for the old 4020 and advertise my services to organic farms.

They use like 5 acres, but still better than you can do farming it.

They don't run transmission line to the farm r-tard they just prefer 3 phase, which is like 50k a mile to run.

So a couple of weeks ago I jokingly suggested my dad should raise some meat goats on the farm...... sent me this email today titled "Optimizing Farm Income"

Hi ben ji,

Success in life is all about overcoming challenges.

Those who overcome the biggest, have the best success.

Sometimes "success" can be measured in income, sometimes in health.

When you have your health, you have everything.

One day you will understand the value of venom therapy.

I'll show you the Eastern KS bee yards and you can do your first venom therapy trial.

Did you know that the reason goat meat is not found at grocery stores is that there is not enough supply ?

Young goats (50 lb) are selling for $150 each.  A 200 lb buck goes for about $175 - 200.  You can get twins on the goats with flock management over a few years.

When mom gets ready to milk goats we can get a couple dairy goats.

The meat goats are the market.  I am still learning about the various breeds and their characteristics, but am leaning toward a Boer goat operation.  I also am investigating a pellet machine (mixes alfalfa, feed, grain into smaller sized feed pellets for goats, sheep).  This minimizes waste.  I could sell pellets to other sheep/goat breeders.  May put a half circle into non GMO alfalfa.  The other half would be grain (wheat, milo, corn).

Running 1,000 head of goats would yield a revenue of $300,000 of which 50% would be profit.  In such a case I'd leave the pasture "as is" for the most part.

Dad

Put some thought into my "health" comments and make some positive changes.

My response

It is definitely a market to look into. I'm pretty sure K-State does research on Meat Goats and you could probably contact the extension agent or Kstate directly and they will tell you all about meat goats.

My only concern is if they could survive a bad winter.

To make more money you might look into selling goats directly to the Hispanic populations of Southwest KS by the meat packing plants. They can slaughter it themselves.

His response back

Hi ben ji,

KSU just opened its new "Goat and Sheep" center.

Yes, I will communicate with the new KSU center.

Goat breeder in Lexington NE has 400 head and never takes them to the sale barn.  Demand is big enough they come to him.  That would be about 600 head / yr.

I will tour some KS goat operations.  Nephew Eric has offered me a tour of one or two operations near Holyrood.

May turn Logan into a goat herder in 10 yrs when his knees give out.  His espanol is good enough he can supervise Juan.

Mom is sure going to love fresh goat cheese.  Her friends will all want some.

I think we need a Ben Ji Goat Baron thread.

I'm not sure how difficult it is to do anything Halal or if your dad would entertain such an idea, but I would think there is a Muslim population that would be interested in your goats.

eff yeah, guard Lama's and Donkeys?!?! Sounds awesome.

I want to understand their operation - size, wintering, having little ones, feeding, containing, shots, plus the accounting side - expenses, revenues, labor.

I want to understand why they are raising the breed(s) they are raising.  Seems most at the sale barn have mix breeds.

One guy up at Oberlin uses Kiki bucks and has mixed doe's.  Electric fence and woven fence are used for containment.

Phase one at the farm is to fence off the farm itself to use the goat for weed control (including the lawn).  A female lama (cost about $150-200) is best protection.  A sheep dog is also good.  Donkey works also.

I know a meade, ks sheep (basically a goat that's fuzzy) farmer who has a donkey with the sheep. apparently to chase away coyotes or whatever. coyotes are super small and pud and I'm pretty sure a full grown sheep would kick ones ass but better safe than sorry I guess.

He setup game cameras around the farm mainly to keep an eye on who is coming and going but sends out pictures of the different animals.

Coyote!
