Serious cow farm question.

You have mentioned how you have to feed the cows everyday. Couldn't the cows just eat the grass for like a week in the summer without being checked on? Couldn't you just throw out like 5x the normal amount of hay bales in the winter and spend the week in Cabo?

Yes, but usually we are feed lot'ing a bunch of them which means they have to be in a small area where they get fed delicious food constantly to fatten up. The cows and bulls just hang out in pastures and only get fed when the weather is super bad. Also there is a ton of other stuff to do, like doctor sick ones, do plant stuff, tractor stuff, etc.

Yeah, 2 ways. Had our own tower thing and every cowboy had their own call number. (Unit 2, unit 3, etc). Could also make/receive phone calls from my dads way before cell phones were a big thing. His truck horn would honk after so many rings. It was quite the deal.

Yes, 10-4 all the time. iirc you would say like "unit 9 (or whatever unit you were) 10-7" if you were getting ready to be away from your radio. "Unit 9 10-8" when you just got back to the radio. This was before the hand held ones which came between the truck/tractor ones and cell phones. The truck/tractor ones had this big bracket on them so you could slide them in and out of whatever thing you were driving and every cowboy had their own.

I don't think I'd be the best blogger for a trucker talk thread TBT.

My uncle and grandparents had cb's on top of their fridge in the kitchen that were the "base".

"Combine to base" "we are going to be finishing up on tom's quarter" "meet us with lunch on the old 40"
When the bullets are flying, that's when I'm at my best

did you have call signs, like "rubber duck" on convoy?

When I was little we had CB's, and Grandpa was "Kingpin" and Grandma was "Star Dust" and my dad was "Big Red" (he had red hair).

That all stopped when we got radios instead of CB's. :frown:

SD you like to rise early, is this due to your background on the Cow Ranch or is it more just life circumstance?

Yeah, but it's usually pretty small time. Every couple years a trashy HS kid or local trash will try to steal like one cow and sell it at a cow sale not far away. Always get caught. Branding pretty much makes it impossible to get away with.
