Tv >>> Movies?
« on: January 25, 2015, 12:08:51 AM »
Has TV surpassed movies?

I've always loved movies. That old commercial "make it a Blockbuster night" fits me pretty good. In the last year or so though I'm pretty sure I've remembered and been more excited to watch way more TV shows than movies.

Is TV just better now? Do you see movies making a comeback? Are movies still the best? When will we see TV characters/ actors earning more than big-screen stars?

Watching a TV series 5 times and a movie over a hundred is probably the same number of hours.

TV is surpassing movies. Last year was the lowest amount of $ that movie theaters have made in a long time. There are a few reasons I think this is happening:

1. Better actors and directors. TV series are not seen as just a stepping stone into movies anymore.
2. Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc. make it easier to follow an entire series instead of having to make shows that are episode to episode with a couple storylines that last a while.
3. People go to the movies to get the phenomenon known as "baby brained". All of your attention is on the movie and you can forget about whatever is going on in your life because you're staring at a huge screen in a dark room. With TVs the size and quality they are, we can now recreate this phenomenon at home.

i really think it depends on the story being told.  some stories are best told in the runtime of a movie. some need a great deal of time to develop.

No TV show has ever effected me emotionally like a movie is able to. TV shows are the Guardians of the Galaxy of the movie world, fun to watch, but no lasting effects

That is the complete opposite of reality.  The only advantage movies have is their budget. TV is better is every way.

I recently got Amazon Prime.  Do you think I have spent a single second watching a tv series?  eff no, you know why because that crap takes too long.

Tv has more time to develop characters and plot.  Movies blow stuff up.  I prefer development.

There is a lot of truth in this. One thing, and I think this is where lib^7 is coming from, is that it's incredibly rare for a single episode of a TV show to leave a lasting impression or be profoundly moving to the viewer. Great movies can deliver that.

I think the growth in television has made poor film-making both on TV and the big screen stick out like a sore thumb.

TV comedies have probably passed movie comedy, but drama is still pretty far behind

I look at serial TV series as 12 hour movies. They're much better than actual movies. They're more creative, have deeper character development, and can explore a variety of subplots that get lost in a nice neat 2 hour package.

It isn't close, really.

I can't believe I left better character development off of my list. That's my number 1 argument and probably the most important aspect of a TV series or movie to me. Obviously TV series blow movies out of the water in this category.

We could probably just say that it is easier, in today's climate, to make a great TV show than it is to make a great movie.

Another part is that people seem to do quite a bit of research before starting a TV show, while watching almost any movie they come across that sounds remotely interesting. Really makes the batting average on what shows you watch a lot higher, curving the numbers.

TV got better because they started being more like movies, but they are still the little brother.
