MLK Day
« on: January 19, 2015, 12:41:48 PM »
Saw the "who got off work" discussion buried in the pit thread about some republican loser, but it's interesting.

I had to work today, but we got the last two years off. Just got a company-wide email from the CEO that included our "Inclusion and Diversity Vision". Kind of sad.

Most of the black people at work took the day off. But some didn't! What are you guys doing for MLK day?!?

in response to OP though our office is open but mrs. dave's is not. we used to close the office on MLK but two years ago they just gave us a "floating holiday" to use whenever.

All of our work holidays just died.  We now just accumulate PTO at a slightly faster rate to account for it.

Have not seen much evidence Robert E. Lee was a stud.  Mostly, he seems like an idiot who picked the losing side in an enormously important historical struggle for human rights.

Yeah. I do give him credit for surrendering earlier than most would have.

This happened 47 years ago today:

http://www.lib.k-state.edu/martin-luther-king-jr-visits-k-state

A full transcript of his speech:
https://www.lib.k-state.edu/sites/default/files/documents/MLKatKState.pdf

When MLK was assassinated in Memphis, he had a note in his pocket with the names of then-UP McCain, and the PoliSci dept head:
http://www.cadsr.udel.edu/inthenewsdocs/03022010ud.pdf

Also, there were a lot of big-name lecturers at K-State in 1968. MLK, RFK, Reagan, George Romney, Fulbright, etc.

A couple years ago my dad had to work on MLK day because the school district calendar-maker thought MLK day was a week later. Can't really blame the person though because the marshmallow-white district had always held school on that day to that point.

When I see black guys at work or talk to black guys about working, it's the white guiltiest day of the year for me.

Segregating MLK's holiday has never seemed right to me.

Last week I was at lunch with a black guy I work with, and he's like, "I'm not coming in!" And I'm like, "oh, I don't have vacation". And he's like, "you know we just got a floating holiday" and I'm like, "um, yeah, uhhhh" and then I go back to my pizza.

Yes! There was an organized walk out the year before I got there

Worked today, but my last company we had the day off but it usually turned into a floating day since it's hard to have everyone gone when we deal with so many other companies that don't observe the day.

Knew a guy that used to call it "you be we be" day. He was from the racist part of Kentucky.

If you couldn't figure it out, he'd be sure to tell you: "You be black, we be off. "
