I don't even remember how the NIT works.  I figured a lot of who's in/hosts is based on who volunteers.

No man, they seed legitimately. The conference regular season champs who don't get in the tournament are guaranteed high seeds, the rest of the seeds are pretty much straight lined by RPI.
