Paper or Plastic: no more?
« on: December 08, 2014, 03:32:36 PM »
So Prairie Village is considering banning grocery bags.  I'm about not being wasteful and the environment and stuff, but really???

What are everyone's thoughts on this.

I've been living disposable-grocery-bag-free for a couple years, now.  Don't fret.  It will not ruin your life if it passes.

So are you allowed to bring in your own plastic bags (that you got on a previous shopping trip) ?

What if you find yourself with a cart full of groceries and realize you forgot your reusables?   :runaway:

They probably have some overpriced reusable bags that you can purchase at the store.

you buy paper bags from the store.  it's a pretty simple concept though, i don't find myself with a cart of groceries and realize i forgot to wear pants or bring my wallet, etc.

But what if you just decide to stop by the store on your way home, and didn't bring the bags with you? What if you buy more groceries than you have bags for?

I realize the motivation isn't practicality, but there are some practical benefits:

1.)  Reusable bags can/should be bigger.  I can fit in 3 reusable bags what used to take 9+ bags to accommodate.  That's 3x fewer bags to carry!!

2.)  Reusable bags are sturdier/more durable.  Ain't gotta worry about your bag falling apart.

3.)  Reusable bags come in many shapes, sizes and styles.  They're a great way to show off your personality while you're out and about.  I bet they even come in EMAW varieties!

4.)  No more putting up with that cancerous growth of wadded-up grocery bags growing out of control under your sink/in your pantry.  You know you're never going to use those 3,000 crappy bags for anything.

5.)  Use your imagination and come up with benefits for yourself!

Here's a tip for you people that do still use plastic bags:
Use an old tissue box to store your plastic bags in and then they are conveniently stored and easily accessible when you need to use them again.

plastic sacks were 10 cents in every store in boulder that sold groceries.

one summer i just wore a really large hat every day like ten gallon hat and then if for some reason i had to make an unplanned stop for some groceries or whatever i just take the hat off and hand it to the clerk and then just put all the stuff in the hat. then i lost it and had to come up with the sewing reusable bag scheme that i'm currently using.

Cargo shorts are just regular shorts that have mini grocery bags sewn onto them.  Your setup is better because a guy can go back to wearing regular shorts when the groceries have been put away.

I just shop at places that have free bags right at the register. I don't even bag my own groceries. The store employee does it for me. Then I cart them all out to my car and put them in the trunk. When I get home, I can usually carry everything in one trip. It's pretty much hassle-free.

I've been living disposable-grocery-bag-free for a couple years, now.  Don't fret.  It will not ruin your life if it passes.

What if you find yourself with a cart full of groceries and realize you forgot your reusables?   :runaway:

It's pretty easy to remember to bring your reusable bags. I think I've forgot mine once, maybe twice over the span of over a year now and it's not that big of a deal.

I realize the motivation isn't practicality, but there are some practical benefits:

1.)  Reusable bags can/should be bigger.  I can fit in 3 reusable bags what used to take 9+ bags to accommodate.  That's 3x fewer bags to carry!!

They really do, maybe even more. I remember having like 10 or so bags for a weeks worth, now everything easily fits into 2.

2.)  Reusable bags are sturdier/more durable.  Ain't gotta worry about your bag falling apart.

Mine look new still, even after over a year of carrying things.

I still use my giant collection of them for trash bags for my bathroom trash can. As stated before, been working on said stockpile for over a year, and   it still is most malignant looking.

5.)  Use your imagination and come up with benefits for yourself!

I use my saved up plastic bags to catalogue (sp?) and then store various bms I take that I might need looked at later.  #supagreen
