What if instead of a penalty box the player has to run all the way around the outside of the field before returning. So like he could do it really fast but be tired or go slow and leave his team down longer

Just like, hang out with friends while you watch it and do multiple other things at the same time because you can afford to miss large chunks of the match because nothing happens. Go completely bonkers when a goal is scored even if you missed it. High five everyone around you and use funny soccer terms you don't really understand and start multiple "ole" chants.

I mean what better way to add a sense of drama than by being able to say, "he really did get shot by a sniper"?
