Wacky, she could suggest some kind of consulting arrangement with her current employer wherein she would be willing to come in for a few hours if/when they needed her for something (and make a higher per hour rate than she does now).

Also, I think you should definitely insist on a credit check before you marry her.

:surprised: Yeah, I think she will try and help them out if she can. She's only going to do two weeks. She's also not going to India or hong kong. She's been there a few times for work and really wasn't looking fwd to it. She's happy.

 I know you're usually right, but she's been bitching about this trip for over a month now. She could give two shits less. She didn't want to go.

I don't understand the people with job experiences of getting let go the same day they put in their two weeks... how unimportant are you to your company where they are confident that you can drop off the face of the earth and the whole ship will keep humming along?

I know with people in similar roles to my own, we frequently ask for the 1 month notice to help with the transition.  But I think that just comes with the game with a technical role, it takes a while to get someone up to speed.   I've even see what Mrs. Gooch suggested play out, where a guy put in his 2 weeks mid project and they got him to stay on as a higher paid consultant for a few months after.  My warning on that would be, if you ever wanted to work there/with those people again, that action can kind of leave a sour taste in the mouth.

Why would it leave a sour taste in their mouth? You are helping them out by coming in after you no longer work there and presumably have another job.

Security or liability are the reasons I have seen ppl get bounced the day they give notice.  If you have access to sensitive info, or are in a position to financially hurt a project or employer through lack of focus, I understand the move.

It's been my experience, in sales, that if you're quitting and going to a direct competitor they don't want you to spend the next two weeks getting info and contacts that might be helpful to their competitor.  Although the good sales people have already gotten their contacts down in a personal computer or phone long before giving their notice.

do people in sales job hop quite a bit? i have a friend in sales who is on his 4th job and is 2.5 years out of college. in my line of work (investment broker) almost no one switches to a competitor. its a smaller industry though.
I think what my friend Mitch is trying to say is that true love is blind.

Yes! Mainly to switch to a better product to make more $. When I was doing software sales all my coworkers had crazy backgrounds from like a thousand different sales jobs.

You don't think a card company that keeps laying off ppl at the drop of a hat is a sinking ship?

so why dont sales companies put in non-competes into their new hires contracts? like for a year if someone leaves they cant work for these certain competitors? maybe im missing something? seems like someone who would be greedy enough to job hop for a little extra cash would sign anything thinking this was the stop on their job hop bus where they become a millionaire.

Well ya, I mean those are my words, not hers, but watching all your friends lose their jobs can be kinda scary. I mean, when it started going down like that at UOP, you bet your ass I was looking.

Some do. When I worked for 610, I had to sign a non-compete for 2 years. It was just to keep me from jumping ship to 810. I never really honored it tho, cause I started doing games for 810 varsity like a year later. I think they only act on it if you're a big deal, with a huge client list.

seems like a different situation. each only has 1 direct competitor and its a no brainer to put in a non-compete in their contracts.

Enforcing non-competes is a huge pain in the ass.  Maybe it's diff industry to industry.   :dunno:

well, yeah. eventually the courts will get involved to determine if the non-compete is fair and enforceable, but youd think that most of the time the battles would only come into play for high-level employees. it would be a decent scare tactic if you have a lot of job-hoppers at your company.

idk. not a contracts lawyer... im sure im oversimplifying it.

I've heard non-competes don't hold up in court very well.
