The comparison wasn't necessarily about the two men, specifically, but more about how they were the embodiment of the majority of fans they service.

A real "everyman" for their fan base.

Certainly he has turned out to be an shitty long term hire.  The SLTHY mold though is based, in part, on a coach who has reached the pinnacle of his coaching career.  The school that reaches down and grabs him is giving him a huge chance he wasn't going to get and he will therefore reward them by toiling away there until he retires or gets an assist job at a big time program.  He will also do things "the right way" and the "kids will play hard and go to class" and there will be many, many, many, MANY close losses.  There will also be blowouts but guess what?  In those blowouts, the kids "won't quit" and even in a dismal season there will be glimpses of development and also did I mention the kids won't quit?
