TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Democratic Party has fired its communications director following online insults directed at three southeast Kansas towns.Dakota Loomis had previously been suspended after posting comments about Cherryvale, Columbus and Galena on a website dedicated to KU basketball. The now-deleted comments called the towns leading contenders for "most craphole small towns in Kansas."Kansas Democratic Party Executive Director Jason Perkey issued the following statement about Loomis' termination:Effective today, Dakota Loomis has been fired from his position as Communications Director at the Kansas Democratic Party. Dakota's remarks were reprehensible, and nothing short of termination is in order here. The Party is offended by Dakota's comments, and we have heard from people all over Kansas who are, too.I am personally disappointed in Dakota. He has been a very close personal friend of mine. Nevertheless, there is no place on our staff for someone who would disparage Kansas or Kansans.KDP Chair Joan Wagnon and I will be traveling to Southeast Kansas on Monday to personally offer our sincerest apologies and hear from anyone who would like to talk.Loomis also issued a statement:I must first and foremost apologize for me callous, insensitive, and frankly asinine comment.I also realize as an employee and representative of the Kansas Democratic Party that my actions reflect not just on myself, but on all Kansas Democrats.I would ask that you not hold my own immaturity and stupidity against the great Kansas Democrats who are working every day to restore Kansas, especially those in Southeast Kansas. It is a privilege to work for such incredible candidates and party members and it pains me deeply to know I have insulted them and undermined their tireless effort.Again, I am sorry for my inappropriate remark and apologize to all Kansans I let down.Previous Associated Press story:The Kansas Democratic Party has suspended its communications director over an online posting deriding three towns in the state's southeast corner in crude language.State Democratic Chairman Joan Wagnon said Wednesday that party spokesman Dakota Loomis was suspended without pay until Monday, when she will re-evaluate his status.Republican state Sens. Jeff King of Independence and Jake LaTurner of Pittsburg said Loomis should be fired over his posting about Cherryvale, Columbus and Galena. The since-deleted comment called them leading contenders for "most craphole small towns in Kansas."The Pittsburg Morning Sun reported that Loomis posted the comment on a site dedicated to University of Kansas basketball.Loomis did not immediately return a cell phone message seeking comment. Wagnon and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Paul Davis called the comment inappropriate.
