The KC Zoo recommendation thread
« on: September 11, 2014, 04:03:02 PM »
I'm heading to the KC zoo saturday!  Sadly, we only have a limited time to visit.   Since I haven't been in nearly twenty years, need some help.

What's everyone's favorite attractions at the zoo?

I always liked the 'cats as a kid, obviously.

How much time do you have at the zoo?

Probably 3 hours?  I don't know how big the place is or if that is enough time?

It's not.  Go to Africa

Huge place.  Go back to Africa first...that's better and has the chimps and apes.  Walk there so you can walk along the elephants.  If not a big walker you'll want to take the tram/shuttle thing back as it's all up hill.  Hit the polar bears but they are right in front so hard to miss.  Penguin exhibit is pretty good too.

The 2 best newer displays are the polar bear, and the penguin, which are up towards the entrance. I'd start with Polar Bear, then go straight to penguins. Then, after that, decide if you want to do the Africa loop or not. The Africa section has some good displays (Hippo, Baboon, Chimp, Gorilla, Crocodile, Lion) and some kinda lame ones. With 3 hours you could do Polar Bear, Penguin, and Africa, or stay up towards the front of the zoo and see the Asia/Australia display. Tigers and Orangutans are cool, and the kangaroos are a decent display. You could also have time to see the Tropics house, which has some gibbons that are neat also.

Personally, I'd recommend doing Polar Bear, Penguin, go to Africa (take the tram on the way back) and do the loop, then if time go to the tropics house on your way back. But if like, Tigers or kangaroos are your favorite animal then skip Africa.

Hell, the rough ridin' otters right inside the front door of the zoo might be the best.

Go to that kids barn looking thing and watch the meerkats and lemurs (no relation) wig out.

The kids barn is kind of oppressive to the senses. That McCaw squawks every 2 seconds and it echos

Why not just take your kids to the pound if you think observing animals in captivity is such a great family outting?

i'm kind of with Spracne on this one. Zoos seem pretty antiquated. Why don't you go look at that giant big cat preserve in Louisburg instead?

Better meerkat exhibit in Africa (I think those are meerkats back there.)

No. The barn meerkats are better. Africa meercats sometimes hide behind rocks and stuff.

never been to the zoo, i prefer to discover animals in their own habitat, it's called the wild.  i guess zoo's are good for animal n00bs though, rookies LOL.

Guys, all the meerkats are great. I've seen both groups be hilarious, and I've seen both groups be pretty lame as well. We're all #1meerkat here, you guys.

Guys, the kc zoo is baller.  Hit polar bears first, Africa next(counter clockwise), then if there is time go to the orangutans over by Australia.

Into the main entrance, see the otters and penguins, head South to Africa.

All non-Africa exhibits (other than the penguins) are kind of boring.
