Kayaking. Top notch.
« on: August 16, 2014, 11:33:38 AM »
Hitting up Wildcat Creek this afternoon.  Going to try to make it to the river. Went a couple weeks ago. Saw an 18 inch channel in the super shallows that let me hold him and a 24 inch gar just garring around. Did not touch him. Will report back on today's adventure,  possibly with pictures.

Anyone else love kayaking? Know of good spots for both fishing and travelling on the water?

Dream scenario for SdK would be starting on the Missouri in MT and kayaking back home. :D

The stretch after the hard right turn would be a bitch.

Sit in or sit on yak?

I'm more of a raft guy but the trip between Fruta and Westwater is really enjoyable. Don't go past the put in/take out point a t westwater unless you are an experienced white water kayak/raft guy or you enjoy drowning to death. Great mesa scenery.

Sit in kayaks.

Was a very fun, relaxing trip. Saw 3 channel cat where the water was about 2 feet deep. Guessing two were 8 pounders and one a 6. Saw a few 30" carp. Gar galore. So many gar. The gar were predominately in the areas that were 7 feet deep plus. Found some very nice spots to fish for the future. If we were seeing nice sized channel in the shallows, I can only imagine what deeper parts have in store. Also found, what I can only assume is a fresh water spring. Ice cold water pouring out of a rock. We made it from the bridge on scenic to very near the fire station. Decided on a better starting point and will press farther next time. Hopefully with poles and/or a net. I could have netted a few cats easily.

Will post pics as they come in. All in all a great time. :D

Skinny, I'll have to do some research on water depths throughout. Might turn it into a raft trip, but yes!

What do you mean, my good sir? Do I know who owns the land on both sides or the creek?

I'm super jelly of Sundance Kid. Do you have a SUV or truck to haul your kayak around?

I would tots kayak(probably canoe) all over if I had a vehicle to transport my non existent kayak.

You dont have to worry about this as long as you stay on the water. I know that everything within the "High Water" line of the KS/MO rivers is public access but that does not apply to creeks or other streams.

I was just going to make a snarky remark about it, because I do know who owns the land.

I do not, sister has direct wildcat creek access in her backyard. I drive a Honda Prelude, but my brother in law has a DODGE 2500 4x4 Cummins Diesel!!!!! hahaahha so finding a new locale wouldn't be hard. Sister actually picked us up in it.

Ben ji, I actually thought of you when we were seeing all these fish and how rarely I'm sure that area is fished. I mean, we were able to ride our kayak to within a foot of them. The last time we went, I actually walked up to an 18 inch cat and caught him with my hands. I'm a huge fan of catfishing.

Also there are two crudely constructed pumps back there. One, we deduced, to fill the pond in Anneberg. The other for the pond on Dave Drielings mansion.

Pretty poor pictures but this is what I got of the Olympic quality course in Wausau earlier this week. They open a gate and increase the flow to make it crazy for comps

yeah that kind of stuff.  Its nice to have family which owns the land.  I would be really nice if KS had some common sense regs on water rights.

Thought about this the other day, the kayaks were probably "sit on" as my legs were free and not covered up.

How do you manage the logistics?

Do you just park a truck where you plan on getting out and go back to get the truck where you put in at?

Tubed Wildcat Creek when it flooded, it was hard to find a place on the bank where you didn't end up getting off the tube in tree branches.  It was definitely a WAY different look of MHK.

Well we have backyard access to the creek. We just call my sister when we want to be picked up.
