Horrible news (Hornet related)
« on: August 06, 2014, 09:00:51 AM »
I got stung by 4 hornets yesterday.  Really hurt.  Still doesn't feel great.

I am in northern MN, at a cabin, and was staking fire wood.  They had made a nest in a hallow log, and I really pissed them off.  They swarmed me.

We ended up burning the hallow log and their nest, which made me feel a bit better.

I had never been stung before, so those first few minutes were a little nerve wracking as I wondered if I was going to die or something, but I lived (Yeah!).

Go cats!

I hope you feel better, pete. My dad is allergic to wasps, which makes me think, if I get stung, I would die. Put some ice on it and eat some ice cream. i bet that will make you feel better.

P.S.- The hornets were my favorite NBA team growing up.  :frown: Sorry.

Why are you burning a hallowed log? God probably made the hornets sting you as punishment.

I hate wasps and hornets and yellowjackets and all the other names for them. I like bees though (non-africanized)

I got stung by a yellowjacket about 2 weeks ago when I was mowing the yard. They had made a nest out by one of my basement windows. I immediately stopped mowing, got in the car, and bought some wasp killer. Then I sprayed them all and sprayed their nest, too. They died pretty much instantly. It was very satisfying. Then I knocked the nest down and crushed it under my shoe. Then I finished mowing the yard.

These are smaller than wasps.  Shorter, but kinda fatter.  Yellow with black stripe things.  There were loads of the swarming around.

There are still a bunch swarming around their old home.  Very problematic, can't really use that side of the yard.

I am not joking, we used at least 6 of those cans and they just kept coming.

Wow, that must have been a big nest. Were you just missing them with the can or were they some kind of super hornet that could fight through the burning pain?

The nest was deep in the hollow log, so we were missing it at first.

We have since sprayed the remaining hornets that are buzzing around the area, but it's either not killing them or there are loads more of them.  The give or what ever is burned up, but the remaining large wood pile is still swarmed.  I don't think there is another hive, they look more spread out now like they are trying to find their home.

I got stung by 4 hornets at the same time when I was a kid.  I was hiding under the porch playing hide and seek and they got super mad about it.  (one sting was on my head!)  Interestingly though, my favorite NBA team would soon become the Charlotte Hornets. Crazy world we live in.
